Tramp big hit on Net

Monday 24th September 2007, 12:01PM BST.

wd2355436josef-stawinoga.jpgA Black Country’s renowned ring road tramp has become a surprise hit on the internet after a website was set up in his honour.

More than 4,000 people on the social networking site Facebook have joined a group dedicated to Josef Stawinoga.

Entitled ‘We love you the Wolverhampton ring road tramp’, it pays homage to the 87-year-old who has lived in a tent on the city’s central reservation for more than 30 years.

It was Kieron Hosell who set up the group. View the group here.

He said: “This man is a legend to the local area and I think we should show our appreciation.

“I don’t know how much of a tramp we can call him as he has a pretty nice set up on that dual carriageway.”

The site has attracted members from as far afield as America and Australia.

And several have posted photographs of Mr Stawinoga, who is affectionately known as Fred.

Julie Wall, who is aged 24 and from Tettenhall Road, said that she and her friends were all members.

She added: “I’ve grown up in Wolverhampton and always tried to spot him on the ring road.

“When I joined Facebook a few months ago I found this group and had to join.”

Mr Stawinoga keeps himself to himself but can often be seen by passing motorists sweeping up around his tent at Ring Road St John’s.

Few facts are known about him, but he is said to have been detained in a Russian prison camp during the Second World War and came to Wolverhampton in the 1950s.

He worked at Stewarts and Lloyds steelworks in Bilston but did not turn up to work one day. The next his colleagues knew he had set up home on the ring road.

He is believed to have been married once many years ago and has been adopted by the local Hindu community as a holy man because of his simple lifestyle. The city council decided years ago to allow him to stay there as he refused to go anywhere else. Officials and church-goers regularly check up on him, bring him flasks of tea and deliver Meals on Wheels.

Why are we drawing attention to a man who clearly doesnt want any attention from anyone. This is such a stupid thing to do to a man who would be spooked if he was to suddenly draw people to visit him.

There is a story of what happened to him and why he ended up where he has, maybe people should read it.

If you genuinely admire and respect him for whatever reason, do it from a distance, and stop this stupid talk of him being a legend, before something happens, and lets face it the muppets around these days this could well turn negative.

I would like to put some facts straight, about Mr. J. Stawinoga I know him since early 1950, in fact we worked together at Stewart and Lloyd in Bilston. Yes he did get married in 1952,but his wife left him shortly after and went back to her native country Austria. Soon after that he didn’t turn up for work and was wandering around Wolverhampton for good many years, pushing his pram with all his possessions, often having a rest outside saint Marks. He stopped shaving and grew ankle long beard. He hadn’t had a proper wash or a bath since mid. 1950. He never claimed any social benefits or even his OEP. He is not yet 87, since he was bourn on 15 February 1922, which makes him only 85 years of age. I with Social Services have organised assembling of new tent, every time the old tent become unusable.
He has never bin in Russia and his whereabouts during the war is only known to me and those old enough to remember war years, but that will remain a secret as I have no intention of reviling his past. regards

This guy needs a statue when he dies, hes managed to do what so many find impossible. He receives no money, he spends no money, and he lives rent free. I agree with the calls to leave him alone as it could give local idiots a focal point for their brain cell. In the meantime give him the space he has created for himself as he has chosen to live like this for a reason and no-one has the right to invade it. If the website of him is attracting visitors perhaps they could raise some funds to help this guy through the winter and pass them onto the “E & S” who I guess will undoubtedly pass them on to the relevent people.

The setting up of a fan club in honour of someone that is completely unaware and who has quite obviously gone out of his way to not only avoid the public eye but seclude himself away from public life is surely an invasion of his privacy. He has his reasons for living the life he leads and making the man into a public spectacle is surely wrong. Drawing attention to him and not allowing him to live his life as he obviously desires is against his personal civil rights. I just hope that he remains safe as this ‘fame’ that Laura Croxford with Facebook has created could unfortunately make him into a target for people out there who are not as caring as most people within our society. Why cannot some people just mind their own business and let other people live their own lives????

    Well done Laura!
For decades this man has chosen to live the life of a hermit. We don’t know why he chose this lifestyle, and it’s nobody’s business but his own. Even Social Services respect his privacy – what help they give is given discreetly. As his presence is well-known locally, it is a miracle that he has not been troubled by local yobs.

Thanks to you, Laura, all this may change. By making his story known to a world-wide audience, you have had your “fifteen minutes of fame” on BBC radio – but at what cost to Mr Stawinoga!
