Frustration mounts for Wolves

Wednesday 19th September 2007, 11:24AM BST.

Wolves v Hull CityBelieve it or not, it’s been only five home League games since Wolves ran away with a rampant victory over Hull City, writes Martin Swain.

The two teams were poles apart on that April day, Wolves bound for the play-offs while Hull clung precariously to their Championship survival.

But that was then and this is now – and while it could be that the Tigers have gone forward the worry around Molineux must be that Wolves have also gone backwards.

It’s become a very difficult game for Mick McCarthy’s team and a third home defeat of the season proves it.

The vibrancy and fizz have gone, the centre of defence is uncertain, the midfield is struggling to dominate opponents while there appears to be more chance of an England cricket captain sneaking unnoticed into a lap dancing club than Andy Keogh and his colleagues scoring.

A mixed start which by Saturday had become indifferent is now dangerously close to being a downright bad’un with Saturday’s visit from Norwich a chance for the players to grab a slice of redemption.

But that promises to be another test of their nerve.

Despite a splendid tribute to another of the departed legends, Norman Deeley, before kick-off, this was one of those early-season, ‘workaday’ Championship fixtures which left Molineux distinctly underwhelmed and left McCarthy’s team needing to conjure something special to raise a muted atmosphere.

The players can expect the same on Saturday but simply have to work their way through what is now the stickiest patch of form and results over which this manager has presided.

Three defeats in four games is not what McCarthy’s Wolves are accustomed to but more unsettling is the form.

This group of players set high standards last season – but only once so far in this campaign, at Sheffield Wednesday, have they delivered the kind of 90 minutes they expect of themselves.

The good news is that the club does not appear to be about to go ‘all-Tottenham’ on us and make a crisis out of a disappointment.

The supporters’ frustration is the equal of that on the pitch and in the dug-out but they saved their jeers for the final whistle; no-one is in a hurry to condemn players whose effort is not questioned.

Indeed, the Molineux faithful were not so wrapped up in their own team’s troubles not to afford Jay-Jay Okocha a terrific reception when he was replaced late on.

The Nigerian is the latest former high-roller – think Merson at Portsmouth, Dugarry at Birmingham and McAllister at Coventry – to remind us of the huge gap in class by handling the Championship’s scurrying with such aplomb even as a mid-Thirtysomething.

But such a generous mood did not stop the fans registering their first major disapproval of a McCarthy decision, mind, when the ever-blunt South Bank began calling for the return of the once-derided Jody Craddock in the wake of what would prove to be Hull’s match-winning moment four minutes into the second half.

Undoubtedly, the team has yet to find balance and nowhere is this more evident than in a back four which last season was the bedrock of the campaign.

The blend of Gary Breen and Darren Ward is not suggesting a partnership while poor Neil Collins last night looked what he is – a right-footed centre-back playing left-back.

He got himself squared-up in the tackle by Richard Garcia to concede the penalty which was promptly put away by Dean Windass, something which a Mr C. Lee, of Torquay, will find amusing having been told by the Wolves board eight years ago that this crusty old Championship striker was too old to sign.

As the ‘Bring Back Craddock’ campaign was launched from behind Wayne Hennessey’s goal, McCarthy re-shuffled Collins into the centre at the expense of Ward while the scampering Michael Gray settled in at left-back and Wolves looked better for it.

But the manager knows his team won’t have anything to build upon until he can bolt down the kind of foundations which propped up the previous campaign.

Equally, Wolves won’t get any momentum until they start making the most of the chances they are creating.

After Hennessey had produced an excellent early stop to deny Bryan Hughes in the ninth minute, Wolves went on create three prime moments which would have changed this game but failed to take any of them.

All three came from crosses supplied by the commendably up-beat Michael Kightly – a 17th minute cross from which Keogh’s header bounced off Boaz Myhill’s feet and another 10 minutes later from which Stephen Ward beat Myhill only for Ian Ashbee to hook the ball off the goal-line.

Not surprisingly, by the time Keogh broke away on to a Kightly pass seven minutes from the interval with only Myhill ahead of him, you could feel the uncertainty as he bore down on goal and eventually blazed a panicky shot high and wide.

Keogh is a dilemma for McCarthy because he brings so many other qualities to his team but the goals just will not come and his substitution for Jay Bothroyd after the Hull goal was a justified if ultimately fruitless switch. Bothroyd came on to smash one screaming free-kick which Myhill saved brilliantly before squandering a glaring far post chance, yet again served up by the indefatigable Kightly.

The biggest disappointment for Wolves will be their failure to get more from Freddy Eastwood in those areas just behind the central striker which he so enjoys.

When he does get a sight of goal, Eastwood gets a surge of electricity but this team and the fans needed more than the thumping 72nd minute drive which rattled Myhill’s left hand post.

This was never a smooth or convincing Wolves performance but that still amounts to half a dozen goal attempts which might have changed the complexion on the night at any time.

While McCarthy’s concerns will be heightened, he will also know that a simple break in his team’s favour could change the season’s faltering early course.

you have two mounths to sort it out otherwise it will be double figures at the albion, but we could always play our second team to make a game of it.boing boing.

Bothroyd in for Keogh, Gray for Ward, move Collins to centre half and demand more commitment from Olifinjana ( he was dreadful last night).Although we played poorly if Keogh was a decent finisher then he should have buried that first half header – also the break away showed his poor finishing. Freddie was unlucky with that piledriver and Bothroyd’s effort from the free kick was goal bound. So Mick ring the changes and lets beat Norwich – this is now a must.

I witnessed a very poor display against bradford and said after that match that things just ‘feel’ different this year. The team looks a shadow of that which delighted everyone last season. Things are going to get increasingly tough for MM especially when he repeatedly states that he sees no need to strengthen a defence that everyone can see is not up to scratch. Dare I say Paul Jewell by xmas??

I am sorry Mick McCarthy but it is back to the drawing board. Last seasons squad excelled themselves but would now seem unable to repeat the feat. Loan signings are desperately needed to “beef-up” a squad that is obviously weak and don’t our opponents know where the weaknesses are? Your comments about being happy with the squad are coming back to haunt you because quite obviously they are not good enough! Players are out of form, injuries to key players, players out on loan who could do a better job, the story (or should that be excuses?) go on and on… Saturday requires a winning result and a good one too otherwise the fans will return to their old habits and who could blame them after 3 successive home defeats? Should we lose again on Saturday to yet another team below us AND the lower teams below win, we will be in 20th place, very difficult to gain promotion from there, after all we are not Sunderland are we? No doubt Steve Morgan is watching the situation very, very carefully MM and if results do not improve quickly then a P45 could be winging its way! Out of interest, is Neil Warnock still looking for a job? Hmmm, could be one coming up soon!

Don`t be too down about last night. Hull are on the up at the moment with new signings (JJ & Folan, Pedersen et al)and have a much stronger squad than last season. You`ve obviously got a great team at this level and not many teams in this division will win at your place. I think you`ll turn it round and end up in the top 6 come the end of the season. Whether that is good enough for Wolves fans, I don`t know.

well, its times like these which make me almost ashamed to be a wolves fan. In the summer we were all raving about MM, now people are actually calling for his head. Pathetic. We have enough opposition fans slagging off our team, surely we should not be helping them. Some wolves fans never ever change and it is sad. I cant believe people are actually paising hoddle now when we was crucified previously. one word – hypocrite. Look at Steve Bruce last season – how many bluenoses wanted him gone?? and now where are they????….I rest my case……

Like Dan, I can’t quite believe what I’m reading. This is a young and inexperienced squad. We need to give them and MM time and plenty of it. There is potential at Wolves in bucket loads. One of the benefits of Hoddle’s reign was that it created such low expectations that the moaners gave up visiting Molineux for a while. We need to build a side slowly (like others have been allowed to do at other clubs). The desire for the quick fix solution has got us nowhere in the past. Let us learn the lessons of our own history and not repeat past mistakes. Good as it has been for Steve Morgan to come in, the very mention of £30m seems to have changed attitudes remarkably – despite him repeatedly saying that we will continue to build slowly. Let those who have ears to hear listen. And let those who are only able to make knee-jerk reactions stay away for a while longer yet. Please, please, please do not destroy what was (and is) slowly being built at Wolves. Let us repay MM and the boys for all the joy and hope they gave us last season. Get behind them.

The team are a mixture of potentially good players, previously good players and second rate players.Unfortunately we do not have enough good ones in the team.
Lets not forget that this team was put together on a shoestring budget and it now shows.MM also clearly will not work with players who have a different point of view from his own hence Mcindoe and Mcnamaras exit.We could certainly do with them now.

Here we go again……..Listen to some of you…..MM out !!!???
Like so totally pathetic, ought to be ashamed of yourselves, I mean do you idiots actually bother to go and buy season tickets or go to the Molineux or do you just sit there shouting out MM must go everytime we aren’t winning by 5oo goals a game.
For pity’s sake all of you with these lunatic MM out comments, please go and support Sandwell craptown and do us all a favour cos you are NOT welcome. You are NOT real supporters.
This is still a young developing team. We substantially over achieved last season with a new young team. So we are having a tough time at the moment, so we are playing poorly at the moment, so we have NOT got a good defence or a competant creative midfield. So we are making chances and not scoring…..Hey it’ll come good, I was as angry as anyone on the way out of moli last night, but I have an IQ of over 12 and fully realise that to go stark raving mad and sack McCarthy would be utter madness.
More a case of out of form than rubbish..More a case of young inexperience than untalented players… More a case of a few mistakes than a serious problem…I would rather have our blip of rubbish form now than the last 10 games of the season….and before you all start EVERY team will have a run of poor results….hopefully we are having ours now, and if we aren’t, MM will change it. He now has the resources, he has the experience and the knowledge and the talent,he j=has been there and done it before, Sunderland were down and out but came storming thru and won the league…didn’t happen overnight did it, took a while… shame you idiot moronic so called Wolves supporters aren’t switched on enough to realise this.
To call for MM out is bloody mental though isn’t it, some of you are pretty pathetically mentally challenged, obviously.
