Foley wants Wolves shutouts
Wednesday 5th September 2007, 4:15PM BST.
Wolves new boy Kevin Foley reckons the Molineux men will need to keep more clean sheets if they want to fulfill their Premiership dream.
Wolves earned their first clean sheet of the campaign against Stoke and Foley thinks it is about time the defence started doing their bit in the race for the top flight.
“Clean sheets are the basis for a promotion-winning team,” he said.
“We need to have them if we’re serious about going up and as a defender and a member of the back five it is what you’re always aiming for.
“If we get that then we’ve got every chance of winning games because our attack is good enough.
“The forwards haven’t let us down this season so we need to give them a hand by getting some more clean sheets under our belts.”
And right-back Foley insists the best is yet to come as he looks to cement his place in Mick McCarthy’s first team plans.
The former Luton man – who sealed a £600,000 Molineux switch a fortnight ago – turned in his best performance in Saturday’s battling draw with Stoke and feels in good shape ahead of the Republic of Ireland’s international double header next week.
“I’m playing more games, I feel fitter and I’m happier with my performances now,” he said.
“The main thing that came out of Saturday was the clean sheet, which obviously we’d not had for quite a while.
“That was a big thing to aim for and that was the main positive that came out of that game.
“As a whole we have started quite well and we can’t let our standards drop when we all return from the internationals.”
Foley is in Steve Staunton’s squad for games against Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
“I’ve been away a few times before with the Republic of Ireland and it is great experience mixing with quality players,” he said.

Clean sheets don’t matter. The defence isn’t good enough, and no about of clean sheets will change that fact. We am desprate for a PACEY centreback. We shiouldoffer Ba**ies £10m for Leon BArnett – the takeover dragged on which ment we missed him, but we am LOADED again now.

To right, shut up shop at the back and let the forwards do the bizo..

LOL
Most idiotic thing I’ve heard all week.
I sure I’m not alone in thinking that if a defence is keeping clean sheets it might be quiet a good defence?
Hmmmmmmnnnnn

£600,000 is looking like a bit of a steal. Another one of Merlin’s magic signings!

We ay got much at the back – especially with Murray out for the rest of the season.
once agin tho – wim being kept in the dark re future planning
nice one MM, nice one Jez

Clean sheets ‘mattress’, even in a defence which is still bedding in.
To argue otherwise is idle pillow talk, and king size sleep walking.
Edwards for the centre of defence.

Assuming about should read amount, is this a wind up or an effort to get into the E&S Colemanballs?

3 points per game is going to get us to the prem not clean sheets!!!!!!!

MM really has a lot to answer for. We have the best attack in the division but his inhibility to get someone in with pace at the back is a sackable offence.

Big deal, stating the obvious. 1 clean sheet every 4 games is not good enough unless we’re scoring loads (which we ain’t).

Cheers visage wolf… with Albrechtsen, clement and pele and martis able to play there, we would snatch the £10M off ya no problem… ooooh the strength in depth we have – makes ya sick don’t it..

Kev is right. Top teams have lots of clean sheets. The question is what do we need to do to increase the probability of this? New central defender? new left back? new defensive midfielder?

visage wolf “clean sheets don’t matter”?? what planet you on another idiotic response from a fellow wolf!!
10m for barnett now i know your taking the pee

Too much comes through our midfield two. In all honesty (and I know we have no chance of getting him) I would like to see Robbie Savage in there or someone else of a similar mould breaking up and starting things for us

THE BEST FORM OF DEFENCE IS ATTACK
Let the opposition know that when WOLVES are coming, they must defend. The chances are that we will score at least one goal, and the other team none. JUST LIKE DON REVIES LEEDS TEAM. BORING. YES, BUT IT WON THEM THE LEAGUE,with a string of 1-0 WINS and only one defeat!

We don’t want to go down the same road as MORRISON at the BOGGIES, ‘BREAK A FEW LEGS AND WE WILL WIN THE LEAGUE’ Attitude.
We have all seen how SAVAGE plays, and it’s not nice to watch is it?

Defence is sound!
The problem is creativity from midfield!!!

14+17.
Having seen Robbie Savage play on a couple of occasions and booing him until I couldn’t speak, he covers every blade of grass on the pitch, wins every 50-50 ball. Might not be pretty to watch but I’d love to see him in an Albion shirt, as I’m sure you would in a dingle top(though both would never happen)

Yes the defence has looked shakey so far this season, but it is because it is being allowed to look that way by being exposed by a lack of control in the centre of midfield. We need a general in there, sometimes we get the performance required from ‘holeinmypyjama’s’ but he’s too attack minded to be breaking down opposition attacks all the time, Potter is not that type of player, the only one we have that I’ve seen is Henry, but he’s not been playing much. I do however have great faith in Mick, and think that he’s built a great team, and added wisely to it when he’s had the chance with some real money
In Mick we trust

Surely if you are getting clean sheets then all you need to do is score one goal and the 3 points are yours.
3 points are the most important thing yes but far easier to achieve when you dont concede
where do you find these muppets

Robbie Savage would be a great signing but even if somehow we signed him knowing our luck the curse would strike and he’d get injured for the whole season.
Besides, MM isn’t interested in old-er players, he wants young guns. Although, he seems to forgot that you need a bit of experience in midfield as well as defence.
Drop Potter and get somebody in, spend some money, and while you’re at it drop S.Ward, he’s not good enough.

Richard R dont know if you have watched the wolves play the last few seasons but clean sheet are not our strong point, if we have a goal put past us we need to learn to pick ourselves up and go get the 3 points. NOW all I CAN SAY IS SHUT IT YOU MUPPET
