The Prince of Wales praised the valour of soldiers serving overseas during a ceremony to merge three historic British Army regiments.

Hundreds of current and former soldiers attended the event at Tamworth Castle in Staffordshire, which marked the formation of the new Mercian Regiment.

Saturday’s ceremony saw the formal “re-badging” of the Staffordshire Regiment, the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters, the Cheshire Regiment, and their associated Territorial Army battalion.

The merger brought to an end more than 300 years of history for The Staffords.

Prince Charles, the new regiment’s Colonel-in-Chief, said: “This solemn and historic occasion will mark the start of another chapter in the long story of loyal service to the Crown that is the history of the English county regiments.

“I have no doubt the Mercian Regiment will stand firm and strike hard just as its predecessor regiments did in all four corners of the world.”

He added: “The Mercian Regiment is being born in an era when the British Army is displaying daily the very best qualities of bravery, loyalty and dogged perseverance in the most impossible and dangerous circumstances.

“I have nothing but the most profound admiration for the sheer resilience being displayed by all our people on operations.”

The prince also presented service medals and commendations to a number of soldiers during the parade, after which serving soldiers and ex-servicemen paraded through the centre of Tamworth.

He saluted the soldiers as they passed him by during the emotional parade, which drew some of the crowd to tears, and received a rapturous applause as he signalled a new chapter for the men.

Could I through your pages pay tribute to and thank all those involved in making the Mercian regiment formation day an overwhelming success. As Leader of the council could I thank all the staff who worked over and above the normal line of duty to ensure that Tamworth looked and felt the place that all residents should feel proud of. I felt privileged to belong to Tamworth on the 1st September 2007 while the future King of England paid tribute to the efforts of Tamworth Borough Council and all the other agencies involved.

The formation ceremony of this new regiment has I believe put Tamworth on the map and has publicised the assets of our town in ways that we can not possibly image, many of the visitors I spoke to yesterday had travelled great distances and had never been to Tamworth before but will certainly visit in the future to see what the castle etc has to offer.

Could I also thank the people of Tamworth for being supportive throughout the day, during the parade and later on the castle grounds, it was wonderful to feel the community spirit as the crowds lined up to watch the parade and ceremony. I particularly notice they way that local Tamworth people mixed so well and welcomed our visitors and military representative on the castle grounds, in the beer tents and fairground there was a sense of fun.

Tamworth was chosen for a number of reasons including the way our town looks, we should all be proud of this and make the most of the opportunities that this has brought us.

Once again a big Thank you to all those involved in creating and carrying off a wonderful day , All staff of Tamworth Borough Council, the police, the other emergency services and all the volunteers that contributed
