Wulfs hit top after derby win

afcw-v-wton-casuals-home-008.jpgBank Holiday Monday was tenants versus landlords as Wulfs, sponsored by Shifnal Environmental Safety Ltd, took on Wolverhampton Casuals at the Brinsford Stadium.

Casuals captain Steve Booth won the toss and elected to play against the wind in the first half meaning Wulfs got a good share of the early possession.

Casuals, on the other hand, were proving to be dangerous on the break with Nathan Walker’s long range shot that forced Danny Tipton to get down low to save the best of their early chances.

Casuals dangerous counter attacking eventually led to them taking the lead in the 15th minute when sloppy work at the back allowed Jon Clarke to nip in with a shot that took a massive deflection and looped over the bemused Danny Tipton.

Things could have got a lot worse for Wulfs just two minutes later when Karamjit Matharu skipped past his man out wide before cutting in and flashing a shot across the face of goal.

Wulfs slowly began to get back into the game and Steve Rich went close after producing a smart turn on the edge of the area before firing a shot just wide of the target.

In the 27th minute a long ball was played forward to Liam Evans and he produced a first time lay off with his chest into the path of the onrushing Robbie Hubball but his shot from a narrow angle flashed across the face of goal and out of play.

Seven minutes later a quick throw in from Liam Evans put Steve Rich in behind the full back and he carried to the by-line before cutting back to Dave Hayhurst but he couldn’t force the ball home.

Wulfs’ pressure finally paid off two minutes before half time.

This time it was Chip Southern who made ground down the right and his low cross saw Steve Rich produce an excellent cushioned pass in to Dave Hayhurst who steadied himself before firing low into the bottom corner of the net.

Ian Perry replaced Robbie Hubball at the break and Wulfs came out of the traps firing on all cylinders.

A quick throw in one minute into the second half, near the right corner saw the ball played back to Chip Southern and he cut inside his man before arrowing a 25 yard left foot shot into the top corner of the net to give Wulfs the lead.

Wulfs continued to press and almost added a third in the 57th minute.

Chip Southern was again the provider sending in a right wing cross that saw Steve Rich climb highest to put a header just past the post.

Ten minutes later and Steve Rich was causing problems again, turning his man in midfield and driving forward before slipping a ball through for Ian Perry to fire a shot just wide under challenge.

Unfortunately, the innocuous looking challenge resulted in Perry taking a trip to hospital with a broken ankle and the game being held up for 15 minutes.

More bad news followed ten minutes after the restart when Robin Sheffield stayed down after a midfield challenge and ended up alongside Pezza in A&E suffering from ankle ligament damage.

The rest of the game was fairly low key although Casuals did force a bit of late pressure and created a good chance when Andy Westwood was slid in but his shot was weak and straight at Danny Tipton and Wulfs held on for the three points and moved to top spot in the Premier Division table.

Wulfs next game sees them host high flyers Bewdley Town at the Brinsford Stadium on Saturday 1st September kick off 3 o’clock.
