Relatives and friends of Captain Sean Dolan, a Wolves-mad member of the 1st Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters,  toured the Wolves ground before last night’s Carling Cup match with Morecambe.

They were invited on to the pitch and met new owner Steve Morgan as well as players including Matt Jarvis, Darren Ward and Seyi Olofinjana, who presented them with a signed top.

Among the group was Cpt Dolan’s 18-year-old son Ashley and his widow Mitch, 42. They enjoyed a chat with Wolves president Sir Jack Hayward after the game ended in a 3-1 defeat.

The soldier’s image was beamed on to a big screen and some of his relatives wore T-shirts bearing his photograph. Cpt Dolan, who was from Rowley Regis and was a Wolves season ticket holder, was killed by a mortar round in the Helmand province in June as he observed Taliban fighters from a vantage point.

Ashley described last night as a lifelong dream come true. He said: “To come to Wolves and meet the players, owner and Sir Jack is like a dream for us. Dad was a massive Wolves fan and this would have meant a lot to him.

“It was unbelievable getting out on the pitch and see what the atmosphere was like from down here. It felt amazing.”  Mitch, who now lives with Ashley in Chester, added: “The Army and the club have been very, very supportive from the start.”

The family has organised a charity football match at Willenhall Town FC’s Noose Lane ground this Sunday from 12.30pm to honour the memory of Cpt Dolan.

Admission will be £2 and proceeds will go to the military section of Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital. There will also be a charity auction with the prize of a signed Wolves shirt.

Cpt Dolan, who was aged 40, was described by the Ministry of Defence as one of the finest soldiers of his generation.

The game is between Devachat FC (this is a team of Seans family and friends) v Wolves Fans Select. This team has been put together from various internet forums. The Wolves fans team and programme and venue has been sorted out by the Wolves team. No one in the WOlves team has any links to the Dolan family except that they are Wolves fans
