Wulfs hit three on way to win

pic-2.JPGWulfs, sponsored by DMW Environmental Safety Ltd, went in search of their first win of the season when they travelled to basement side Goodrich but came up against a team who were much better than their early season record suggests.

With the wind at their backs it was Goodrich who made the early running and almost carved out a good opportunity in the 5th minute when former Wulfs player Ryan Bradshaw made it to the by-line and cut the ball back to the edge of the six yard box but Stewart Mason was on hand to make an important challenge at the near post.

Goodrich went close again in the 11th minute when Adam Simkiss hit a stinging thirty yard free kick that Danny Tipton had to tip over the bar.

Goodrich continued to dominate the play and should have taken the lead with two good chances in the space of a minute.

First, in the 20th minute, Tom Davies sent in a good cross from the right and Lee Osborne nipped in to send a header over Danny Tipton but just past the far post.

Then, one minute later, a Lee Osborne through ball put Ryan Bradshaw clean through but the outstretched leg of Danny Tipton saved his point blank shot.

As generally happens, Goodrich were to rue these missed opportunities as Wulfs took an undeserved lead in the 27th minute.

Richard Gummery nicked possession in midfield and released Andy Mitchell down the left.

He drove in to the area before curling a ball towards the far post where Steve Rich was on hand to volley home.

Steve Rich spurned another good opportunity nine minutes later when he screwed a shot well wide but Wulfs did extend their lead four minutes before half time when some slack play at the back by a Goodrich defender allowed Robin Sheffield to win possession, drive into the penalty area and hit an unstoppable left foot drive into the roof of the net.

Goodrich still weren’t out of the game and had two good opportunities to get back into the game in the space of seconds shortly before half time.

Firstly an in swinging corner from the right should have been headed in at the far post by Danny Forward and then from the resulting corner from the left, John Clapp headed over the bar under no challenge.

Wulfs were forced into a half time change as Mark Tipton replaced the injured Robbie Hubball.

The game was almost finished as a contest four minutes into the second half when a deep cross from Chip Southern on the right was spilt by the keeper to the feet of Oli Meanley who pulled the ball back for the incoming Liam Evans to side foot over the bar.

Instead of taking control of the game, Wulfs stuttered in the second half and almost got caught out when Lee Osborne slipped in to the penalty area before driving a shot across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

The game was finally put out of Goodrich’s reach in the 77th minute when Mark Tipton sent a 25 yard free kick from wide on the left curling and dipping in to the top corner of the net.

Dave Hayhurst was introduced into the action and tried his luck with a 25 yard shot that flew over the bar but by then the hard work had been done and the three points were banked.

Final Score: Goodrich 0 AFC Wulfrunians 3.

Wulfs’ next game is Saturday 25th August away at Wednesfield kick off 3pm.
