Lee Hughes out of jail
Monday 20th August 2007, 11:49AM BST.
Shamed former Albion star Lee Hughes was smuggled out of prison today after serving three years of a six year sentence for killing a father-of-four in a car crash.
It is believed Hughes was driven out of Featherstone Prison, near Wolverhampton, at 7am in a bid to avoid the media camped outside.
The Home Office today refused to deny claims he was given preferential treatment as one of the crash victims spoke of his disgust.
A spokesman confirmed the 31-year-old left the Category C prison. Other inmates let out through the usual exit said they were held back while Hughes was smuggled out, possibly in a prison van.

The striker was jailed in 2004. Hughes, who started his professional career with Kidderminster Harriers, has signed to play for League One outfit Oldham Athletic.
He is expected there this week and has already been allocated the number 9 shirt.
He was in his £100,000 Mercedes in Meriden, near Coventry, in November, 2003, when it hit a vehicle carrying Douglas and Maureen Graham and Albert Frisby. Mr Graham died instantly and his widow died in her sleep 13 months later. Hughes fled and was arrested 36 hours later after handing himself in.
Albert Frisby, 62, who suffered multiple injuries and still has trouble walking, said: “In my eyes he was sentenced to six years and that’s what he should have served. As far as I am concerned he killed those people – he could have killed me, after all he left me for dead.
“The arrogance he displayed in court says to me that he’ll do it again. What makes it worse is that he’s out of prison now to start his life over again – playing football in the first division, whereas our lives have been destroyed.I have yet to receive any compensation for what has happened.

His picture should be put up in every dressing room as a reminder to players what heppens when you waste your talent and live like a spoilt brat with no feelings or thoughts for others.
I danced on the terraces when he scored for us – now I wish he would just dissappear.

I assume that the “preferential treatment” to which you refer was the fact that “Other inmates were held back while Hughes was smuggled out”.
Well, what shocking action!! How dare they? I mean these inmates were highly concerned about the “media camped outside” waiting for them also I assume?
What he has done is wrong. However I am willing to bet that of those “held back”, many were also released after only a portion of their sentence had been served and that they will go back to their normal lives without the “media” chasing them down the street!
What he did was wrong, but by no means exceptional. He, like the others, is entitled to his second chance.

3 years in Jail for killing somebody and destroying a family. It’s an absolute disgrace. He should rot in hell for the rest of his life.
Three years of a Six year sentence for destroying a family and killing a man. Not only did he do that, he was a coward who fled the scene and handed himself in three days later. Probably to get the alcohol and drugs out of his system that led to the crash… he should be banned from football by the FA. So should anyone else with a Criminal Record. I don’t want my kids growing up with a bunch of cons as their idols.
Everybody makes mistakes but some are unforgiveable and in Lee Hughes’ case it is just that. He should have been made to walk through those prison gates just like the next man and take what was waiting for him on the chin. I just hope that he is prepared for a totally different life to the one he enjoyed prior to that fateful day. He deserves no favours or preferential treatment and certainly does not deserve a resurrected career in football.
He doesn’t deserve to go back into professional football. He needs to redeem himself, if that’s possible,
and become a good person by being charitable, maybe helping unfortunate people would be a good start.

i agree with wots been said, Lee Hughes should be stopped from playing football for life, my kids love the albion, wot example is he setting for young players and supporters, they are just going to grow up thinking that its ok to do wot he did, he obviously doesn’t give a damn.
goverment are on about letting people out early when its close to the end of their sentence, well lee hughes was know where near the end, he should be made to complete his, footballer or not!!! why should he get special treament!!!
…….. i feel really sorry for the victims family, why should they have to hear about all the success that lee hughes will be having at this new club, and hows hes getting on with his life, cause the victims family sure won’t be able to get on with theirs that that easy……… BAN LEE HUGHES FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

baggies-girlie : “why should he get special treatment!!!”
Being released after half his sentence is not special treatment – it’s common practice.
It’s wrong, but it’s not an individual your angry at it’s the system put in place by the Government you elect. If you don’t like it vote, protest to your local MP, run for local government or council.
Act on your passion and change the world, don’t sit at home and whine about it and blame an individual.

Why should he be stopped from earning a living? He is a football player, that is how he earns a wage. It’s not like he is going to be earning lots of money nor playing in a top league. He has served his time in prision – it’s not his fault that it was only three years and should now be given a second chance, that is how the British justice system works.
Baggies-girl, he is not getting preferential treatment because he was a footballer, he was allowed to apply for parole – like other prisioners – after half his sentence was served, anyone in the same circumstance would be allowed to apply at the same time.
What he did was wrong, but so was what Bowyer, Woodgate and countless other football players did, there have been and still are loads of criminals playing professional football many with more lucrative deals than the one Hughes will soon be signing the Oldham Athletic
Report abuse
Alex…Why can’t he do both?
baggies-girlie…he didn’t get special treatment. The majority of offenders are entitled to a parole hearing after completing half of their sentence.
Ok, 6 years for his actions is lenient, but that’s the justice system’s fault. He’s done the time, so should be afforded the same rights as every other free person.
i dont agree that hes has been given preferential treatment, however he has served the time handed down to him just like any other person, why cant he go back to his “job” just the same as any other prisoner may want to,i just hope he has learnt from his mistakes and shows some remorse
Report abuse
Baggies-girl, if it wasnt for the media jumping on the bandwaggon and people keep going on about him they would hardly be hearing about Lee Hughes, he will be playing in the third division, oldham never make the national newspapers except for a couple of lines in the odd tabloid on a sunday giving a very brief review of the game.
Either the BBC or ITV (i forget which) are running stories on it this evening and trying to get people to participate in interviews about the release and the possible signing of Hughes for Oldham -why? are they interviewing people about the other hundreds of prisioners released today? They will no doubt mention in the interview about how the familys of those involved will feel about it being all over the press – well it wouldnt be if they weren’t making a big deal out of it!!
I do feel sorry for the family and for the guy who was injured in the accident but as per the British Jusice system Lee Hughes is now a free man, the sooner people stop moaning about it and the sooner the media stop going on about it the sooner all those involved can try to get on with their lives

im so glad tht albion sacked him he is a disgrace he should be banded from playin football its a disgrace 4 the fans. i willl feel sorry 4 oldham fans tht have 2 pt up with him but if they give him support thats just sick.my heart goes out 2 the family tht had 2 suffer with their loss hughes should rot in hell he is a disgrace 2 the baggies n oldham.

Gemma said “why should he be stopped from earning a living?”
By the same token, why should an innocent man be stopped from living through the irresponsible actions of another?
You can’t tell me Lee Hughes or any other individfual in this country is not aware that driving whilst under the influence is dangerous, illegal and can have fatal consequences.
Sympathy level zero.

He should have been left to rot in prison.
What about the family of the victims, they have to live with this crime all their life.
Send him to the Molineux, he will wish he was back in prison !!!

A sad day for a lot of people involved because of one man. Being an Oldham Athletic supporter, I’m very saddened that my club has decided to offer him a job. However, should he score goals for my club, I will celebrate the fact my team has scored…rather than the scorer. His name should never be sang by my fellow fans, but I know it will. We know football has run out of morals, this takes it to a new level.
Thoughts are with those whose lives are ruined because of him. When I’m asked why doesn’t he deserve a 2nd chance….the answer is simple….when he did what he did, he never gave a dying man a 2nd chance to live by phoning an ambulance. He made his choice to run away. And that IMO will always be the most unforgivable bit about what happened.

What sort of a coward runs off and leaves a man to die.
Hughes I hope you never have peace of mind and don’t forget…..

Having lost someone in a car accident i agree that the sentence is way to short should be at least 10 in my opinion but thats our stupid country for you. But as for banning him from football when he has servrd his sentence (all be it far too short) is very silly at least whilst he is playing football he is paying tax and i am happier he is paying into the system than the sponges that take everything out. again dont agree about how short his sentence was the only thing we can do to stop this kind of thing is not vote for the people that come up wuth the stupid leaniant setences in the first place
Report abuse
Swanleywolf I wasn’t saying that people should have any sympathy whatsoever for lee Hughes, any sympathy goes to the people he hit and their families. All i meant was i don’t understand why people think hughes should be treated differently to anyone who has committed the same offence. Once you have served your time you are free to get on with your life which includes being able to earn a living. I personally think that the 6 years he got should have been much longer – as with anyone who has committed such an offence, but it wasn’t it was 6 years and can apply for parole after half the sentence was served, that is how our justice system works like it or not
Report abuse
I’m disgusted that the people involved have not received any compensation. I’ve red over the years that Hughes has caught religion in prison but clearly this does not extend to helping his victims.
Obviously the punishment does not fit the crime in this case but I see no reason that having been let out he should not try to resume his occupation. Whether or not playing for Oldham is better than being in prison is a moot point. But it could be worse, he could be back at the Albion!
Perhaps he would like to say something, but for the grace of god go i,bet he feels sick, dont condone, but society bred him.

No compensation as been paid to the living victims of this horrific crime. Whilst Hughes will continue to an overpaid arrogant spoilt brat, just like the day he ran from the scene and like the day he faced the Mr. Frisby in court. He should be sent to Iraq, but that would surely would contravene his human rights!!! Only in England this would be allowed.

Comment Number 10 from Gemma is an absoloute disgrace. let me just ask you this Gemma, if he killed your father and walked away at all let alone after 3 years would you be saying the same thing, NO YOU WOULDN’T so keep your stupid opinions to yourself. He’s a killer and a killer doesn’t deserve a life of his own having taken someone elses

How many people drink drive? Loads. How many get caught? How many flee the scene of an accident? If this guy was,nt famous. How many of you would write Comments? He as done his sentence. Hughes will have this man’s death with him until the day he dies, and I hope he remembers each day what he did. Unfortunately, footballers don’t always have their brains in their heads.

Bad decision by Oldham to take him on . I cant see him being allowed to forget his criminal action and the manner in whuich he attempted to avoid the consequences and that when he appears at football grounds in fuyure he is made to remember it and the suffering still endured by his victims family.

Do not believe for a second he is sorry about what he did. The man was high on drink and drugs when he plowed his car and killed an innocent, probably good man. To continue to make a living playing football is nothing short of a disgrace.

As a life long Albion fan i agree 100% what lee did on that fatal night was wrong and he should never be allowed to forget the pain he caused that night in August. Every person who comes out of jail is given a second chance. Had he not been famous how many of you would have left a message. Lets just hope he and others who drink and drive sit up and take notice of the pain there actions leave to those left behind.

OK. Just to post my thoughts, and the thoughts of many other oldham fans, as far as i’m aware;
Lee hughes, committed a crime, served the sentence he was given, adn was released on parole! Like it or not, if he was a plumber I very much doubt you would have such high opinions in protesting at him ever plumbing again. Hughes has managed to get a stable job at oldham and has every right to. I don’t condone what lee has done, but thats in the past, he’s done his sentence and has every right to a second chance. And where wer all of you when jermaine pennant was playing wearing a tag! He never served a sentance but I dont hear any complaints when he’s on the field representing his country as a man with a criminal record! (guess you better stop your kids watching pennant eh? baggies-girl)
oh and stacy – dont feel sorry for oldham fans. we don’t support his past, but the majority do believe he deserves a 2nd chance and I for one will support his future with the club!!!

Yes what Hughes did was shameful, but as it has been said before, he has served his time, he is now out to get on with the remainder of his life. So what if he is playing football, it is what he knows. How many petty criminals come out of prison and go back to their job – stealing? Hughes shouldn’t have the fingers pointed at him, if you want to blame some one, blame the British Judicial System.
If you want to put a stop to this, stop your moaning and get your head in the books and become a Judge. Then you can comment on judgement.
Sadly it would seem that many Oldham supporters are already coming out with the line that Hughes has done his time, that it’s ok for him to pick up with his life and generally getting on the defensive. In the case of Hughes it may be worth bearing in mind that it seemed the Judge may have wished to give a harsher sentence – he was definately of the opinion that leaving the scene was a calculated move rather than being driven by panic. I do, however, think a bigger point has been missed. Yes, the judicial system is severely flawed and things need to change (even though it will be extremely tough with loopholes and legislations which can be taken advantage of and in may cases judges hands are tied) However, in the business world people do have the power to take action and make different choices. As a Blues supporter I appreciate we had Pennant playing for us and, yest, he did wrong. However I don’t feel that what he did can be compared to Hughes’ case. Some acts are borne out of stupidity, which is where Pennant and Hughes were initially similar. However both cases are not the same in any way, shape or form. It is not so much the fact that Hughes possibly drove under the influence (thanks to the 36 hours he went missing, for which I beleive a full account or explaination was ever given). I know that but for the grace of God theat Pennant may too have killed someone in a similar incident. However, to me (and most people) it is quite simply the calculated actions of a self-serving coward to leave the scene of such an accident with no regard for the people you leave in your wake. To then hide for 36 hours whilst news bulletins are appealing for you to come forward must take a special brand of self preservation. This allows a period for many intoxicants to leave your system and time to spare to contact a good lawyer. The only call Hughes should have been making needed to be to an ambulance and he should have faced up to what he had done from the offset. Then maybe people would be a little more prepared to forgive. Simple! Isn’t it about time that all supporters stopped supporting the antics of players, full stop. It sticks in my throat that Woodgate and Bowyer have had such successful careers after committing such hideous acts. Footballer’s legs should be considered as lethal as Boxer’s fists. And cars driven recklessly or under the influence should be classed as lethal as a knife or gun. When people die shouldn’t it actually mean more than it currently does?
I agree fully with Gemma (comment Number 10). He has done the crime, served his time and now let him earn a living as any person released from jail woul. I sympathise fully with the vistims and Lee Hughes should pay them some extortinate compenasation for their loss, but he his entitled to earn a living at what he knows and if thats as a footballer then so be it.
This is a disgrace, this man is an absolute coward who ran away from a scene of a crime without any regard for anyone else. There is a guy still on crutches and father of four dead because of his actions. The FA should ban him for life and everyone should boycott Oldham in protest.

I feel really sorry for this individual. Played top flight football, had £100,000 mercedes, earned £16,000 a week. If that is`nt enough to contend with the public then treat him harshly for killing an innocent man, crippling another fleeing the scene topped with not having to pay a penny in compensation to any of his victims. Oh dear the poor chap has had a hard time. So, just for once let`s do a good turn to all decent people and hang him. He`s the most vile excuse for a human being I`ve come across
Report abuse
what he did was wrong but you cant blame him for just serving 3 out of 6 years its same with every prisoner.what he shouldnt do is if and ever he scores goals again he shoudnt even celebrate got nothing to celebrate about what he,s done.head back to centre circle and carry on.
6 years was far too lenient and let out after 3 years is worse.
HOWEVER, I believe once criminals are let out, they should be entitled to try and live their lives the best they can, and do good for the world where possible. How do we know that Hughes might not donate some of his earnings to a relevant charity for example? And I have read that he is going to talk to young Premier League players about the dangers of drinking and driving.
I don’t know the guy, a few years ago I was only just getting into the sport and so I don’t know what he was like then, and now. He WILL have to live with what he did for the rest of his life, and its up to him to try and extract some positives to help others. And its too early to tell if he will or not. In the meantime, even if there has been an injustice, he is free to seek employment however he wants. Would you rather him unemployed and resort to more criminal activities?
And I don’t think Oldham have much to answer for, they want to be a good team and they will know the possible backlashes, and they will think his contribution to the team is worth it.
The only thing I think maybe could be done in the future is keeping criminals out of the sport, to encourage young footballers to stay away from crime. But that would mean many players would have to be removed from the sport, or else people would complain about inconsistancy.
ok so hes a fool and did probably the worst thing he could have done however. it was not his choice how long he would stay in jail for, it was not his choice of how long the sentance was. but it was his choice to go back to his job regardless how much he earns. put yourself in his shoes hes not goona be playin for very long. the fans will remind him every saturday of what he has done but i tell you now if i was him jus out of jail i would say screw you all i served what was told to serve. i was released when i was told i had no special treatment when in the jail im goin back to work. like you all say he should jus dissapear. im sure you would go back to 16 000 a week after being in jail hypercrites
