V revellers face soggy show

wd2287396la18vfest-5.jpgAfter spending hours stuck in nightmare traffic queues, the first arrivals at this year’s V festival would have been forgiven for being a little tired and grumpy.

But despite frustrating journeys to get to Weston Park, the only thing on the agenda today was having fun despite the rain.

More than 50,000 campers spent last night on site and thousands more were arriving today.

Last night the festival funfair was packed with thrill-seekers making the most of the dry weather.

Rain began hammering down at around 5am this morning, with forecasters warning revellers to be prepared for mudbaths as heavy showers are expected over the weekend.

Among the first to arrive yesterday were campers Sarah Walker and Zoe Scott from Stafford, who were in good spirits despite the roads misery.

Tessa Shaw, a 27-year-old hotel manager from Halifax in West Yorkshire, said it took her nine hours to get to the site.

“It was a nightmare,” she said today. “We never thought it would take that long. We soon forgot about the journey when we arrived though.”

Gareth Ott, aged 25, and also of Halifax, said no-one seemed to bothered about the impending rain. “You’ve just got to get on with it,” he added cheerfully.

Organisers have installed a special drainage system to cope with the wet weather. The arena was opening at midday today, with former Sugababes star Mutya Buena among the first to perform.

This afternoon chart-topper Lily Allen was taking to the stage followed by Manic Street Preachers and Basement Jaxx.
