Looters target fire-hit mill shops

Shannons MillLooters have targeted shops in Walsall affected by the Shannons Mill fire by using rugs to cover barbed wire security fences at the back of vacant properties.

Both Karen’s Cafe and T’Boo clothing store in George Street say they discovered large rugs and blankets covering the barbed wire which was used as protection for the back of their shops. They made the discovery after returning to work on Saturday although they said they were relieved that nothing had been taken.

Carolyn Gittings, of T’Boo, said: “They have thrown carpets over the barbed wire and fence on the back wall. We think they were trying to break into the shops here and next door.”

Karen Sanford, of Karen’s Cafe, said they had also had carpets thrown over the back wall.

She added that although nothing had been stolen the molten ash had melted most of the cafe’s chairs.

She said: “We have also been worried about the looters but we only have food. Some of the other shops have stuff which is more expensive.”

The cafe, T’Boo and Jazz hair and beauty salon re-opened on Saturday following the blaze which tore through the historic former mill.

Yesterday the Express & Star revealed how Walsall Council had pledged £10,000 to encourage customers back to the area.

A support group has also been set up comprising the council, the Shannons Mill Development Team, the Walsall Market Traders Association and the Town Centre Management office.

Capstone’s Bistro and Restaurant and Empress Clothing remain shut while experts ensure the structure of both shops is safe.

Shops said trade had generally been slower than normal since the fire took place on July 3.

Meanwhile, demolition of what remains of Shannons Mill is under way, and work is expected to last until August 19.

I thought in cases of emergency like this it’s ok to shoot looters?
