Gun drama girl in court
Tuesday 7th August 2007, 8:00PM BST.
A teenager accused of helping a gunman who shot a policeman on a Wolverhampton street to evade capture appeared at the city’s crown court today.
Melissa McKenzie, aged 19, denied one count of perverting the course of justice but pleaded guilty to another, which involved giving false details on her arrest.
McKenzie, of Bromford Rise, Blakenhall, was bailed until a directions hearing at the court on September 4.
Marcus Bailey, a thug with a history of violently resisting arrest, lay in wait for Pc Geoff King near in Penn last November before pointing a gun at the officer’s head and firing three times, almost killing him.
The 25-year-old was found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court last month of attempted murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years.
Prosecutors, who said his sentence was “unduly lenient,” failed to convince top law chiefs that his the term was too short. Bailey could now be back on the streets at the age of 40.
