The boyfriend of an aspiring young midwife killed in a horror car smash in Wolverhampton has admitted causing her death by driving dangerously without a licence or insurance.

Ben Sanderson lost control of his blue Renault Clio and ploughed into a garden wall in Amos Lane, Wednesfield, with 16-year-old girlfriend Karra Hughes in the passenger seat.

She was rushed to New Cross Hospital by ambulance.

However, she died shortly afterwards. Sanderson escaped with fractures to his ribs and collarbone. The couple’s young son Camron was just five months old at the time of the tragedy.

Yesterday at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Sanderson admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance or a licence in relation to the crash on January 7.

The 19-year-old, of Woden Avenue, Wednesfield, will hear his fate in September.

Karra, from Ashmore Park, was a popular Coppice Performing Arts pupil who dreamed of becoming a midwife and was due to start college four weeks after her death.

Speaking shortly after the death, her mother Carol said: “She was just a wonderful girl. We just keep expecting to see her walk through the door. She was a friend to everyone and everyone loved her. She was a real character and very popular.

“The response from her friends has been amazing. We are a very close-knit family and it is just devastating what has happened. It is a complete tragic accident.”

Hundreds of cards and flowers from mourners marked the spot where she died for weeks after the crash.

The teenager was laid to rest in a pink coffin after being taken to Bushbury Crematorium in a white horse-drawn carriage.

Karr’s family have vowed to keep her memory alive and are compiling CDs and books of memories for her son to grow up with.

Judge Nicholas Webb gave Sanderson unconditional bail yesterday as he adjourned sentence until September 17 for reports to be prepared.
