£30m courthouse set to be built

Wolverhampton Crown CourtA new £30 million courthouse will be created in Wolverhampton it was confirmed today – despite three years passing since the plans first came to light.

The scheme to transform part of a 300-space public car park and the site of a redundant office block at the junction of Darlington Street and the ring road has hit the skids since outline planning permission was granted back in 2004.

The project includes 14 court rooms, offices, secure accommodation for magistrates and judges, a custody area, public waiting rooms and a cafe and a 56-space guarded car park.

The new complex, which would be between three and six storeys high, would be built on behalf of the Department for Constitutional Affairs under a private finance initiative.

Around a quarter of Fold Street car park would be lost, along with the office block owned by Portland Building Society.

But Wolverhampton City Council is hoping to build a decked car park on the remainder of the Fold Street land to help compensate for the dozens of lost spaces.

An outline application for the development was approved in November 2004 and planning bosses had hoped to get the scheme kicked off this year.

Oh goody! Does this mean that more offenders will be taken off our streets? No. It probably means a few more ASBO trophies for the local troublemakers. Another waste of time and money. As a final thought, “Constitutional Affairs”? We don’t have a constitution!

We do have a constitution, just not one that’s written down in a single document.

I’m glad to see that at least part of the Portman property is included in this. Otherwise it would doubtless go the way of so many buildings in this city and simply rot.

When are we going to have some more pride in this city and actually make property owners take care of their buildings, empty or not?

Haven’t we already got a relatively new courthouse in Wolverhampton? Why do we need another one?

Already got a functioning courthouse, so I believe!!
So, would`nt it make far more sense to use the £30 million of “our” money that seems to be burning a hole in some petty local bureaucrats pocket, in projects and methods aimed at crime prevention?

I was just thinking that too. Why build another one when only a few years ago a new one was built.

Could be £300 million as far as I am concerned, the law is only worth three shillings and sixpence in this country !!!!

Mmmm? And as many as 56 Car Parking Spaces. But there again they do not need Planning Permission!

Three Levels or Six Levels, they still do not appear to have made-up thier mind!

Where has the name of ‘The Department for Constitutional Affairs’ come from? – We do not have a Constitution!
