Baggies target £3m defender

wd2250318ltfc-v-leicester.jpgAlbion were today closing in on the £3m signing of Luton defender Leon Barnett – raising more question marks over the Hawthorns future of wantaway Curtis Davies.

Sources in Befordshire insist the Hatters are resigned to losing the 21-year-old and believe it is only a matter of time before he signs for the Baggies.

It is understood Luton are ready to accept around £2m up front for their player of the year, with add-ons set to take the potential fee up to £3m.

Personal terms are unlikely to be a problem, although Hawthorns sources today insisted a deal remains some way off completion.

wd2250318ltfc-v-leicester.jpgAlbion were today closing in on the £3m signing of Luton defender Leon Barnett – raising more question marks over the Hawthorns future of wantaway Curtis Davies.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray has been eyeing Barnett for some time and failed in a double bid to bring both the Stevenage-born stopper and Rowan Vine to The Hawthorns in January.

But Luton’s relegation to League One has made Barnett’s exit inevitable.

Although Barnett is primarily a central defender, Mowbray has been attracted by his versatility and believes he can also do a job as a midfield enforcer.

The youngster, who played alongside Davies in the Hatters’ under-18s, impressed when asked to play the role last season, and has also filled in at full back, up front and even in goal in an emergency in the past.

Barnett’s potential arrival will only increase speculation that Davies’ days with Albion are numbered.

The former skipper, who left Kenilworth Road for Albion in a £3m deal in August, 2005, has made no secret of his desire to leave the Baggies for the Premiership, having a transfer request turned down.

Should Davies, who remains a Spurs target, move on before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August, Luton will receive 12.5 per cent of any fee through a sell-clause agreed with the Baggies.

Albion are to run the rule over Miguel Tininho after offering the Portuguese left back a trial. Their interest in the Beira Mar defender was revealed by the Express & Star yesterday.

Would be a very good signing – young, hungry player and hopefully not full of his own importance (curtis davies !! ) get him in and hopefully more will follow

Don’t know much about him, only what I’ve read.

Sounds like a good buy, just hope we can wrap the deal up quick before Steve Bruce finds out about it.

just to follow on what we8wba commented. that’s completely negative and irrelevant and also typifies what went wrong for us last season it’s a team game not about just one individual. luton would have gone down last season even if they had rio ferdinand at the back !! let’s get some positives out of this

sounds like a decent signing if we get him, hope he wont be a repeat of davies. still need one more big name at the back.
we should get rid of davies asap, as an albion fan ive lost all respect for him, hope he has a great time playing in the reserves for a prem club

He’ll be a good player with the right players around him, unfortunately Newell sold Carlos Edwards, Sol Davis had a stroke, Heikennen didnt want to play and Chris Coyne is 50. I think when we played at your place, MN played him upfront !

I’m just amazed that the first post on here is once again from a tatter. They really must be worried about what’s going on at the Albion to keep looking at our news stories. I never go near the Dingles pages I just aint interested. Why don’t they stay away and worry about their own twopenny halfpenny little outfit that will go nowhere next season

Sounds like a great signing, let so many goals in his team were relegated last year, but sounds a bargain at 3 million. Right up there with the bargain wolves had with Kighly. Makes Eastwoods signing look pathetic at Wolves. Hoestly, this defender has an awesome record………….worth every penny……………….

Bring in player who want to play for the club, preferably young and ambitious.

As for Curtis, he said he will give 100% and be professional, yet at the same time throws in the captains armband? Is that professional?

My mate who is a Hatters season ticket holder (poor b*gg*r) reckons Barnett is a better prospect than Curtis. I’d rather ToMo grab bargain prospects from the lower leagues than pay over the odds for some overpaid reject from Blackburn reserves who demands 20K per week… Get ‘em young and hungry!

Are wolves signing barnett..? No ? Then why on earth are they all over this story making their childish little comments – they would die for a defender like barnett to replace their traffic cones.

He is stronger than davies but as fast – a great aquisition to the team. He will make a formidable wall with Mcshane or Martis or Sodje or whoever – what options.

Very positive move by ToMo – all going towards a fast and strong squad. BOING BOING

bit pricey for a defender without experience at a top club!
Surprised has not been snapped up by Fulham or Wigan or another team with premiership pedigree?

Loads of Dingles shouting their mouths off again, eggs on faces once again me thinks. I hope we get the lad signed up I’ve seen him play a couple of times, quick, good in the air and young. Maybe not the finished article but has anyone thought we may be buying him to play alongside Davies?, after all with plenty of cash in the bank we are under no pressure to sell. Personally after Davies’s cry baby tactics I don’t really care if I see him play in the mighty blue and white strips again. Personally I think Davies will definately go and I think it will be on August 31st about 23.59PM a we will get around 7.5 million for him.

Agreed! wolves aren’t in the black country. We should apologise to the Luton fan who got caught in the crossfire because the comment wasn’t aimed at him.Smethwick Baggie said tatter , not hatter.
When Blues snatched Rowan Vine from under our noses with a ridiculously high offer, we were also looking at Leon Barnett. Tom Ross kept saying that we should forget Vine and go for Barnett because he was a much better prospect.
