Greening: I’d love to be skipper

Wednesday 18th July 2007, 3:00PM BST.

Jonathan GreeningJonathan Greening says he would be honoured to become Albion’s new captain – but expects to be overlooked by boss Tony Mowbray for the full-time job.

With Curtis Davies having been relieved of the captaincy following his decision to hand in a transfer request, Greening has led the side out in each of their first two friendlies with Histon and Hajduk Split.

The 28-year-old will hand over the armband tonight after being named among the substitutes for the Baggies’ clash with Red Star Belgrade.

But although Greening, now one of Albion’s most senior pros, is harbouring hopes of replacing Davies as captain, he admits there are other candidates – led by Sunderland target and room mate Paul Robinson.

“I was really honoured when the gaffer asked me to captain the team,” said Greening. “With Curtis’ situation up in the air the gaffer felt someone else should have a go.

“It was nice to get it and I would be delighted in the future if I was asked to wear the armband, although I would think Paul Robinson might get it if he stays on.”

Greening has limited captaincy experience in the past but believes the extra responsibility would bring out the best in him.

“I was captain a few times at Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup and for Manchester United reserves and I enjoyed it,” he added.

“I’m getting quite old now, so I’ve got to get the captaincy some time.”

Robinson is expected to start his first game of pre-season against the Serbian champions this evening at the Fazanerija Stadium in Murska Sobota. Mowbray is likely to chop and change the side that drew in Split.

Greening is a model pro with a good pedigree. He’d be a great example to the youngsters and showed some great form towards the end of last year. Robbo on the other hand really strikes me as someone who doesn’t want to be there. We all gave him the benefit of the doubt last year when he was considering leaving. To be honest we’re all a little tired of his chest thumping and shouting, which he seems to use to mask his overall lack of ability. Time to go Robbo!!!

Greening must be dreaming if he thinks he’s good enough to skipper the Baggs!!

He’s far too much of a Lady-boy to be any good.

Every on knows that Ugly = Good and Greening is just too Pretty to be a contender!! Perhaps he could make some cash extra advertising a shampoo like Jason McAteer. Or may be an epulator for his sleek legs!!

I would give my backing to jonno – he seems like the sort of player and person both players and fans can look up to. Alternatively To MO could look towards Clem – another model pro for us. Either one would be a good choice.

Greening would be a good choice. Shown his commitment by wanting to sign another contract, he his the commited type of player we want at the Albion. Keep up with the good work TM.

I think he would make a decent captain but the question is will he be able to perform consistenly enough to keep his place in the team throughout the season. As for Robinson i dont believe you can give the captincy to a player that has not pledged his future or at least near future to the club i think that Dean Kiely could also make a good captain for the club as a consistent performer and a model professional.

i think you need to give captaincy to someone who has publicly expressed a desire to stay.give it to hartson,he could save you from a 2nd succesive relegation

Give Jonno a go, he may not be the best player on the team, but you will always get 100% from him and I think he’d inspire the lads around him. Beside’s that, he’s also shown his commitment to the club while certain others have been all to quick to run for the door.
