Police car in chase crash

Saturday 7th July 2007, 5:00PM BST.

wd2218429cookley-thieves-s.jpgA police officer was injured and two patrol cars were damaged after thieves stole a pick up truck and led police on a seven-mile chase around Kidderminster.

Children and parents enjoying a school fete at Cookley saw the commotion as police tried to stop the vehicle which eventually collided with an unmarked police car.

The drama started at 2pm yesterday when police received reports that a Ford Ranger pick-up towing a trailer was stolen from Trimpley Drive, Kidderminster.

Police followed the pick-up through Wolverley to Cookley where they tried to stop it from escaping in Lea Lane outside Sebright First School using their vehicles.

But the determined thieves rammed their way through and caused extensive damage to a marked police Vauxhall Astra and an unmarked police Vauxhall Corsa.

A parked Volkswagen Passat estate and a Ford Focus were also damaged as the pick-up tried to squeeze down the narrow lane. One police officer suffered a minor leg injury but did not require medical treatment.

The two police vehicles were believed to have been written off. The pick-up continued through Wolverley to Kinver where the thieves abandoned the vehicle in the High Street car park and tried to run away.

Police arrested two men on suspicion of theft.

Phil Carey, who lives in Lea Lane, heard the commotion outside his house. The 58-year-old retired council officer said: “It was a chaotic scene. It looked like the police had tried to block the pick up off but it just shunted its way through.”

Trader Rob Cooper, of Just Kitchens in the High Street, said: “The vehicle came into the car park at top speed. Someone would have been killed if they had been in the way.”

this is very similar event to the one that happened a few weeks ago ending in our street in heath town at12.00am , only this incident was kept very queit, the man who stole the very big truck(had a crane on the back)from derby, jumped out of the truck and broke into my neighbours house and hid in her loft, there were police everywhere and helicpoter the full works, the driver of the truck reversed into one of the police cars that was chasing it, he too could have killed someonei believe he’s in court monday,he knew where he was going because he had connections in our street, do we get told anything by the police? no, has it been in the paper?nothis was a huge incident let me tell you.i can’t believe no-one got injured, or did they? we don’t know.

Was there any thought for the public or children when the police tried to block the truck? What if the thief had tried to avoid hitting the police cars and hit the school instead. It could of been a dam site worse. Iknow we need to stop these thieves but at what cost.

Stopping criminals with heavy sentences via the courts is the only way, but with our mamby pamby wishy washy legal system at present [judges included] I fear greatly for the future !!!!

Does Cindy give any thought that the police may have been blocking the road to PROTECT PEDESTRAINS, TO PROTECT MOTORISTS COMING THE OTHER WAY?

You can tell from the state of the Police car that the stolen car was travelling fast and any head on collision, or collision with pedestrains would have been fatal.

Cindy…..you really do want to think before opening your mouth and making such “jump on the band wagon” STUPID COMMENTS.

Simple strategy for stoppoing stolen vehicles is to use the ‘stinger’ system which must be less expensive than numerous Police Patrol vehicles being written off.
The Police have this equipment so why not use it?

Edward…….maybe they didnt have it available? I assume officers must be trained to use this? It sounds like they had less than a minute to make a decison. No one was killed or badly injured so I would find it hard to criticise the police. Well done I say.
