wd2008311.jpgWalsall have been linked with a move for former Birmingham striker Tommy Mooney as boss Richard Money looks to improve his squad.

Mooney has turned down a contract extension at Wycombe as he assesses his options and sources say he is interesting the Saddlers.

Money issued a firm “no comment” on the Mooney story today, but he was keen to stamp out continued rumours of interest in Shrewsbury right-back Ben Herd, who is still to sign a new deal at the New Meadow.

Money issued a firm “no comment” on the Mooney story today, but he was keen to stamp out continued rumours of interest in Shrewsbury right-back Ben Herd, who is still to sign a new deal at the New Meadow.

Walsall are keen to recruit fresh firepower after the departures of Hector Sam, Per Cederqvuist and Tony Bedeau, while loanee Trevor Benjamin returned to Peterborough.

The four departures left Money’s squad with Martin Butler as their only experienced frontman.

Money also has youngsters Troy Deeney, Alex Nicholls and David McDermott, but they are going to take time to reach their full potential and the Saddlers boss may well be looking for some experience up front.

“I will not comment on speculation,” said Money today. “We are chasing targets that we’ve been chasing all summer. We haven’t missed out on anyone.”

The arrival of Mooney would be the third successive vastly experienced player to join the Saddlers this summer following the arrival of Paul Hall and Danny Sonner.

Mooney turns 36 next month but has a healthy recent record, after hitting 29 goals in 87 league games in two seasons at Adams Park.

He also knows the Midlands well, having started his career as a trainee at Villa before enjoying a popular spell at Blues, where he hit 13 goals in 29 starts in a total of 174 goals in 542 league starts.

Kris Taylor has joined fellow freed Walsall players Mark Wright and Pead in getting fixed up elsewhere by signing for League Two side Hereford.

Wright and Pead have agreed two-year deals respectively with MK Dons and Brentford.

I mentioned this on a previous article on Monday!

Would be a good signing in my opinion. If we can get him then I’d say that’s the forwards sorted.

All that would remain is to get players capable of supplying the said forwards!

We need pace, how old is Mooney now 45? I do remember money taking Troy Deeney down to Wycombe with strict instructions to watch Mooney’s game so from that I would say Money is a fan.

Tommy would be a welcome addition to a young squad, he’s CV proves it, using his age as a lame excuse shows a naiveity
