Airport alert after terror attack
Saturday 30th June 2007, 8:29PM BST.
Birmingham International Airport has raised security levels after a burning car was driven into a Glasgow airport terminal.
The set-down roads at the front of the Birmingham terminal were closed on Saturday evening.
Airport bosses are advising people to use the short-stay car park for dropping off or alternatively visitors can park in one of the main car parks.
An airport spokesman told the Express & Star: “It is still unclear what the situation is at Glasgow Airport; however as a precautionary measure, the police have closed the roads at the front of BIA’s terminal until further notice.
“The airport continues to operate at a heightened level of security. It is important that people follow the directions of police and airport officials, and that they do not cause congestion by blocking bus stops and other access roads.”
Eyewitnesses in Glasgow described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.
They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.
Strathclyde Police said two people had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.
The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST on Saturday.
