Church protest over phone mast
Monday 25th June 2007, 11:50AM BST.
Churchgoers were jeered when they left their service as residents protested against a proposed phone mast.
Police stood by as people left St Francis of Assisi Church in Wednesbury’s Friar Park yesterday. The campaigners are angry at Vodafone’s bid to install a mast in the church tower.
They fear it will pose health risks to people on the nearby estate and believe the church will financially benefit from having the mast. Ann Mobley of Wednesbury Action for the Re-siting of Telephone Masts said they wanted the proposals to be thrown out.
“It’s a peaceful protest but we need to let the church know how we feel about this,” she said.

“Morally it is totally wrong to have a mast put up at a church. Research shows how dangerous these masts can be.”
Resident and campaigner John Ward said no-one from the church would talk to residents about the situation.
“They are treating us like we don’t exist,” he said.
“We have an 800-signature petition to show how against this plan we are.”
Friar Park councillor Simon Hackett was at the protest and said: “I support this because it’s letting the church realise the size of the opposition to the plans. You can see how angry these people are. They have turned out on a Sunday morning in the rain and they will come back every week.”
Councillor Hackett added MP for West Bromwich East Tom Watson also supported the campaign.
Churchgoers disagreed. One member of the congregation, who asked not to be named, said: “It annoys me to think they all have mobile phones – have they ever wondered how they work?”
Another churchgoer said: “If it’s not in the church then it will end up on the estate.”
The Church of England’s Diocese of Lichfield director of communications Gavin Drake said the protest was based on misinformation.
“The Parochial Church Council have agreed in principle that they are happy for a mast to be installed in the tower of their church,” he said.
“We are at the start of a consultation process, not the end of it.”

What a disgraceful way to treat church goers. I bet many of those on Friar Park have never set foot inside a church.

I do not own a mobile phone, neither do I want one, but I suspect that the protestors have more than one each, and are the first to complain when they get a bad signal. We cannot have it all ways!
Besides, I have heard that much of their chanting was personal. Shocking
Report abuse
I have a mobile phone and I except that these masts have to go near to the people who use them. There is one not far from my own home. I bet all of these protesters have phones, do they not wonder how they get their reception? I live near Friar Park and a relative who was at the Church says the language used by the protesters was blasphemous! I’m not a church goer but even I am offended thatpeople can do that. shame on them.

I stood and watched this protest for about half an hour, whilst i was watching i saw them chant “ban the mast” and other chants along those lines, i also heard them booing, one church member tried to argue with them and then started to what seemed to me to be winding them up,the police officer took this man to one side, had a quiet word and he left not looking very happy.Another lady came out of the church and they chanted and so on. the only personal thing i heard while i was there was someone shout “you are not christians” it was at this point the church goer turned around and blew a raspberry whilst doing that action kids do when they put there thumb to their noses and say ner ner ner ner ner..i left not long after so do not know if anything else happened.

Although the UK government has claimed these masts are safe, there is expert evidence that these masts emit signals that interfere with the human brain. This is not the same danger as mobile phone signals, the signals from these masts are stronger and are of different type. people living close to these masts have reported migraine, a burning sensation, sleeplessness, and a lack of concentration as well as cancer. The fact that a church puts money before it’s community is shocking regardless of whether they attend every week or just hold weddings etc there.
People are more important than profits!!
Unlike television sets and microwave ovens, masts produce continuous, twenty-four hour a day exposures to low levels of electro-magnetic radiation. It is the constant quality of the exposure that makes them especially dangerous. This effect is most pronounced for infants and children. whose cells and DNA replicate at higher rates during early childhood development than later as adults.
Wow it is shocking to me, but not because the church goers were jeered and it became personal after all the affects these masts could have on these people COULD PERSONALLY AFFECT THEM. No what is shocking to me is someone stating that because these people may not go to church they are not worthy of an opinion or their opinions and obvious anger mean nothing or less because they are not religious. I do hope i misunderstood, I really do.

i live in this area and have a vodafone contract phone, i have never had any signal problems at all so i’m a little confused as to why they need it. i will be looking into these masts and if there is any hint or chance they could be harmful to me and my kids then the contract will be cancelled and i will be at the next demo. my kids come before anyones greed for money or hurt feelings at being jeered. i see no mention of any arrests so those who protested must have remained within the law, i’m sure if they overstepped the mark as some have hinted then they would have been arrested.

This is how i see it after reading this article.
The protesters say
“We fear for our health and you do not care and dismiss our concerns”.
Churchgoer says
“But it’s ok because you have a mobile and you annoy me because you do not want to be exposed to anymore than what you are now”.
protesters say
“There is research to show that these are dangerous”.
Churchgoer whines
“But it will have to go somewhere so why not in the church so we can have some money”
If they wanted to convince people having the mast is not harmful which is the protesters main objection they are not doing a very good job, You can not just dismiss peoples concerns like they mean nothing,No wonder the protesters are angry.

I AM writing to express my concern about the proposal to install a mobile phone base station in the on st francis Church. There is clearly a lot of argument about the pros and cons of mobile phones but there can be no doubt that the jury is still out about the health effects of mobile phone base stations. We live near to st francis Church and are really worried about the possible consequences of low level radiation for ourselves and particularly for our children. There have been a number of studies suggesting a link between such radiation and cancer and other health problems. Surely the church should listen to the concerns of local residents and exercise caution until more is known, especially as mobile phone base stations are not essential services but profit making enterprises, why should we be put at risk for the sake of big business? Some councils have taken the lead in refusing permission for mobile phone base stations within 200 metres of any school, or residential dwelling ect. This would certainly disqualify the proposed station at st francis.

i have to say i agree with those against the mast. the arguments in favour are trying to condem the protester but at the same time do not acknowledge the opinions or fears of the protesters. it seems these people defend the churchgoers feelings when they COULD be putting lives and health at risk and that seems to come before the protesters who could suffer. a bit back to front if you ask me.
I tell you what, lets ban mobile phones, either these masts go somewhere or they do not! In fact, lets ban cars, far more dangerous if you ask me! Oh, and while we are at it, lets ban electricity, plenty of pylons in Friar Park, radiation and electrocution are always a risk.
I own neither a mobile phone or a car, but i recognise that we cannot go backwards, this protest is nothing but NIMBYISM run rampant, and the introduction of the emotional element, (its a church putting profits before people) is an underhand trick which evinces this.
Hypocrites!!!!! – Bet most of them own a mobile, and their kids probably own one too. I totally agree with Gary, If your gonna ban the masts, ban everything else thats dangerous!!! I live near and electricity Pylon, but I’m sure as hell not gonna protest if its providing electricity for people….

Gary says

I have to say if the church is taking money whilst ignoring the community then that is a FACT, when profits get put before people and it is done by the so called church which is meant to be a community protecter then i think the emotional element is bound to appear. This could affect health. would you want to have a nuclear facility on the estates? after all you could not object as it would mean going backwards, i do not believe for one minute the people who say they do not own a mobile, it would be akin to non smokers not pushing or not welcoming the smoking ban in pubs ect because they do not care about passive smoking dangers. It does not add up to me.
well gary i must say you are a bit daft. shall we bring back asbestos too, Was it wrong to ban it and stop it’s use? Both are suspected of causing cancer the difference is though asbestos is not a big business money maker like mobile phone companies. greed is a sin.

Residents are dismayed that they were not asked for their views on the mast. The church has also refused to meet local residents to discuss their concerns. I would urge both the church and Vodafone to urgently think again and not erect this mast.

“Professor Anthony Barker, who has over 30 years’ experience studying the biological effects of electromagnetic fields, says mobile phone masts are not more dangerous than common TV or radio transmitters. Prof. Barker works at the Dept of Medical Physics of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, UK”.
The NHS and the scientific community say their is no significant danger.
Secondly this mast is being installed to expand 3G coverage, so you may well already be able to get a good ‘normal’ coverage. Many on Friar Park will want 3G coverage.
Personal abuse against Church goers was unacceptable. Have a go at the church authorities not the worshipers.

I usually find that the people who support these masts don’t have one near them!
would these people like to forward their names and address, so that the mast companies can consider putting these mast’s in THEIR back gardens.
I believe the local council now refuse to have them sited on there land. Why would they do that if they didn’t recognise the health risks.
the people of Friar Park are doing the right thing to stop this mast and protect their’s and their children’s health.
no one should ever put profit making before health!!

People can’t have it both ways. They are quite prepared to but a small handset next to their head which is far more powerful than a mobile phone mast, yet they think that the masts that let them make the calls should be banned. it stinks of hypocrisy and mob mentality. If it doesnt go in the church then it will be on the pavement outside someones house and be far more visually intrusive. Masts do not cover large areas and so they need to be close to where people are using them. If people took time to read all the replicated, peer-reviewed researdch, then maybe they would take a more balanceed view- but oh no they are prepared to jeer and shout and church goers- including children , to make a point. Disgusting behavior- shame on you. Get your facts straight before you take on this nmob mentality. What does that teach our children ?? Do you know that a mast gives out around 100 watts?? Did you know a baby monitor is more powerful and next to a babys head?? Do your research- dont just believe inaccurate scientific reporting in newspapers – Go to the HPA the WHO etc. Not the anti- masts sites who will of course brainwash you into believing that masts are killing us all – and to make you even more parnoid some will sell you an acoustocom to measure RF …but at a price of course… – think about it people- how many lives have mobile phones saved – hundreds if not thousands… how many people have been made ill – NONE !!! Put things into perspective – PLEASE!!

i live on friar park and the so called mob metality those protesters showed will be nothing compared to what will happen if my grandkids become sick. i have to say sarah you want to trust politicians with our health then thats your stupidity shining through. remember bse? now people are dying from that, do you hear about those dying now? no but they still are. reading through the posts on here it is clear to see the ones supporting the masts were said churchgoes who got heckled. well get used to it, i will be there on the next one and if the church refuses to listen then heckle i will… how many who support this mast live on friar park? none i would guess just like the churchgoers mostly come from other areas and telling us to put up or shut up…well this one will do neither , this resident will be shouting the loudest at the next demo…

Have any of you who support this mast heard of the STEWART REORT? HAVE YOU SPOKEN TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE ONE NEAR THEIR HOMES AND NOW HAVE CLUSTERS OF ILLNESS AROUND THIS. Any of you understand vodaphone are like tesco and have a lot of clout in this country GOVERMENT. All mobile phones companies will put profit before health and if you think this goverment put people before profit then all i will say is …More fool you..Watch the expose on tesco that was done by dispaches and see how these things work. you may take off those rose tinted glasses….trust the peers in goverment? you can if you want but this old timer is a lot wiser through age and experience. i would say to the protesters they should calm down, otherwise their cause will be weakened by their obvious and justified anger.

Church goers blowing raspberries? wow! what a stupid thing to do. surely they would know how it would wind up these protesters? The church needs to start listening to the residents instead of acting like children. They lose their moral highground by doing such immature actions.

Maybe the church should do it for free and that would put an end to that. That would solve that problem and just leave the health risks to consider. when money is involved you rarely get the truth and UNBIASED decisions.

I live 100 meters away from this proposed mast.
AND NO ONE WILL EVER TELL ME THAT I CAN NOT PROTECT THE HEALTH OF MY KIDS!!!!
There are over 800 names and rising in a petition against this mast and no one, I repeat no one who lives by this mast has said yes to it.
The only people who support it are the people who either attend the church, or will in some way benefit from it financially.
Who the hell do these people think they are telling us on Friar Park to shut up AND put up.
I can guarantee that the ones who support the mast with the comments above live no where near this church.
And what are the church playing at anyhow? Upsetting a whole community for around £150 per week to host this mast…are the church really that hard up? Have they totally lost their morals?
I was at the demonstration and the comments about a MOB and BLOCKARDING the church are LIES, yes there was some chanting and for those of you really interested contact Inspector Patterson at West Bromwich, who was there, to confirm this.
The MOB / BLOCKADE comment was made by the churches own press officer Gavin Drake, this goes to show how low the churches morals are dropping, simple lies.
But if the church doesn’t have any consideration for people on the estate, I suggest the whole of Friar Park may not have any consideration for the church, maybe then unfortunately we may have mob rules.

I am a friar park resident and me and my family have always been learnt to show respect towards the church ive got nothing against the church and i was at the protest sunday and i can tell you now as far as i know non of the protesters have either. But why should a mast be placed in a holy place which is supposed to be the house of the lord.Surely they could find a much more suitable place away from a residential area and away from schools as it states in the stewart report. And i can tell you that if it was not a peaceful protest then how come no one was arrested. Also do people relise that having the mast near could drop the value on their houses.
As a peaceful resident and protester i would like to say that although i do not attend church it does not mean that i do not respect it.
And even if the church did accept to have the mast in the tower with out having money off vodaphone i believe that the residents would still not want it here.
And because we as the community live by the site where it might be erected i think our opinions count.
Also i think if the church was lacking funds i dare say that the community as a whole would rally together to try and help support the church.

I totally agree as to what is said above by John, i too was there, what he says is totally and UTTERLY true about the protest.
The kids on Friar Park deserve better than this, its already a designated area for poverty, and i hope its earmarked for some regeneration in the near future from the national government, what we can do without, are some dogooders who want to bring it further down the ladder, such as these so called Christians, the only ones they are looking out for are themselves, spiritually and monetary, go back to your ivory towers and leave us alone in peace,
they ought to hang their heads in shame for what they are thinking of inflicting on the good people of Friar Park.
Personally,
i dont need a church to do my praying, i can do it anywhere i like, and so could everyone if they try.

Now if only the church had said they would be giving out vouchers to Lidl and free Elizabeth duke jewelery there wouldnt have been a protest in sight, also how did they make their signs? I didnt think they could spell?!!

Also i dont think spelling has anything to do with the matter, these boards are from local residents stateing their views so would you please stop trying to put friar park people down. And it is about a PHONE MAST not smoking, i dont care if you can smoke in the church or not.The church is a place were you go to worship not a place were you go to smoke. Or about where people shop. Just because the church are willing to receive money and put it first dont mean that we around here will.(WE ARE NOT THAT LOW, WE COULDNT CARE LESS IF THEY GAVE US VOUCHERS)

Sam you do realise you are steroetyping a whole communnity. It is easy to slate friar park because its an easy target for people like you. i have read stories in the press who have obviously taken to sterotyping too about how these protesters were violent yobs out for trouble. I thought this was disgusting behaviour.UNNACEPTABLE Threats and intimidation from these residents is what i thought after reading this and other stories about this issue. Imagine my suprise yesterday having settled down to watch central news and up flashed this issue with the protesters in the background. I waited patiently until they went live to friar park to see these friar park rabble rousers and thickos. well how wrong can one be. Lets just say i wish these residents well and they changed my mind with the quiet dignity they showed on central news…well done..a lesson well learnt for me…

There was a public meeting on Thursday 12th July to express concerns about the proposed mast at st. francis church.
The residents of Friar Park hope that that Gavin drake, Mike Clark and Bob Jackson listened, and took on board, our concerns.
Please may we draw your attention to the following FACTS
REF: World-News Independent Media Source…
Over 1000 independent studies, linking phone masts electro magnetic radiation with serious ill health including cancer, confirm that masts should not be sited within 350 metres of schools or housing. Phone operators dismiss such research, alleging that their own studies suggest no health risk. However last month the national press revealed that T-Mobile covered up the damaging results of their own research. The Ecology Institute, a research organisation which examines the health effects of mobile phones, was commissioned by T-Mobile to investigate the possible health risks of mobile phone masts. The 2003 Ecology report confirmed:
‘Given the results of the present epidemiological studies, it can be concluded that electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range do play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system”
———-
At the meeting on Thursday night a Mr Mike Clark from the health protection agency would like us to believe there where no health risks, yet he wouldn’t personally grantee it, yet he made the following statement below…
REF: Statement by Mike Clark science spokesman on 8th march 2004 “there is little doubt that some people are affected by the presence of masts in their neighbourhoods. This is real and not imaginary.”
———-
Rev Paul Hawthorne, the
Diocesan environmental officer wanted to come and talk with Friar Park residents and stated “The key initial issue to me is whether there are many residential or
Child-orientated buildings within the area of influence of the mast… are in general nervous about applications involving
Churches and was involved in lobbying for tighter restrictions”
Why was Rev Paul Hawthorne, Diocesan environmental officer refused permission by the church to attend the meeting?
———-
There is a real risk to health, and the proposed mast should not be sited in a church, which should be used as a place of worship.
The aerial would also facilitate the access to pornography and on-line gambling and this in itself is inconsistent with the Christian church.
The church should reject the said mast, and once again take its place as a caring neighbour in the local community

2) Most of my family live of Friar Park.
3) Im having a laugh and the people i was pointing fun at are the one who wait for thursdays dole to go down Lidl for their 85p cans of lager and spend their nights at Mecca, think shell suits hide a multitude of stains and like to take their kids out to the super markets to smack them and also think a runny nose encrusted in grit on a squealing 3 year old is so sweet!
If you are not in this minority then pull up your knickers and move on i wasnt referring to you, if you are in this group then learn to use a condom, wash yer kids and teach them that stoning santa is not an acceptable yuletide tradition,
oh and good luck getting my email address i dont want to be inundated with chain mail and petitions for lidl to have a 3op lager range!
Oh and for your information i dont watch trisha!

sam i doubt very much you live on friar park, the throwing stones at santa incident happened in TIPTON. i suggest you stop judging people for by the same token you will be judged too. watching jerry springer is soooo much worse than watching trisha, springer encourages confrontation and violence and trisha offers advice and help..way to go springer gal..

i have just read some of the comments on here and jackie, i do not live on friar park anymore but my sister does and while i was visiting her one christmas, i know for a fact that santa had stones thrown at him, as for the mast being dangerous to the children, standing in the middle of the road whilst daring cars to hit them is potentially dangerous too, and i think that would kill a child faster than the mast would, and this again is fact, the amount of times that i have driven down friar park road when the children are going or leaving school and most, not all the behaviour is of this standard. I am sure i wouldnt want a mast in my back garden, as i havent made my mind up to the dangers of masts yet, but as i said there are more dangerous things out there that people dont seem to want to do anything about. And as for the violence/shouting, is there not an article further up that states that churchgoers were booed when leaving the church, is that not a form of bullying, you cannot attack a religous believer for what is happening around them. I would imagine a vote wasnt taken in the church. all those in favour say amen…….err dont think so…….and as i said I do not live on friar park anymore, did so most of my life, and i still think my heart is there, and as for the comment on the kids wi snot lol well all i can say is for many years this was a substantial part of my meal times…….better than the school dinners at any rate…….lainey……

Hi all , just wanted to let you know the outcome of last nights meeting.
It was held by the trollies outside Lidl at 7.30pm, thanks to Mrs Ledbetter for the snacks and drinks (the monster munch were superb and the Sunny Delight out of this world).
A few things were discussed and here are the main points that were finalized.
1)There will now be a new bus service to shuttle residents from the post office straight to Lidl on a thursday mornings, this will aptly be known as the Giro/Lager route.
2)The millenuium centre is now operating a latch key service for the under 25′s so if you cant get into your house as your father has fallen into a stupor on the setee or your mam is at Mecca you can come and stay with us your new home from home, facilities include Digital tv with the remote control batteries covered in masking tape,
Playstation 2 tornements with 3 year olds.
Free roaming whippets and Jack Russells.
With complimentart background noise of siblings fighting and the occasional banging from fake neighbours and the obligatory ‘Shut the fook up!’
3) The centre has be refurbished to inclue peeling wallpaper, sweat stains near the ceiling and quaver wrappers under the seats.
4)On the hour every hour some one will announce that the ‘baccy’ woman is here and if you ahve any ‘baccy’ needs she can offer you the latest selection smuggled in from france (She also does wine, spirits and the odd Dvd player).
We are also please to anounce a new scheme for the tents to teens.
Our local entrepeneur ‘Sticky Fingers Magee’ will give free demonstrations on how to hot wire a car in under 4 seconds, how to pop a side window and how to tell the signs of a sat nav on board.
We are also please that Trish the bike is here to give the girls free sex ed classes, these include how to pleasure your boyfriend and not drop your chips.
how cocoa cola can be used as a sopermacide
Popular sex spot on the canal and how to claim all your benefits when pregnant.
All these lessons are aimed at the highest pregnancy rate age group in Friar park (the under 12′s).
Our next meeting is planned to be held under the canal bridge by the Pylon garage where Mrs Jukes and john (100 meters away) will be giving a demonstration of the FP’s Dogging group!
SEE YOU THERE!!

lainey said above “an article further up that states that churchgoers were booed when leaving the church, is that not a form of bullying, you cannot attack a religous believer for what is happening around them. I would imagine a vote wasnt taken in the church”.
.
LET ME CORRECT YOU AND ANYONE ELSE WHO IS INTRESTED….
the initial vote on whether to host the phone mast in the church IS taken by the pcc of this church (the parochial church council).
It was these pcc members that the protesters where aiming thier comments at, and i can honestly say that the church members WHERE giving back verbal abuse (swearing) and hand jesters to the protesters.
“the truth works both ways!!”.
95% of the pcc in this church do not even live on Friar Park, so, with respect, it is very easy for those people to say “sure stick the damm mast up, we dont live by it and we dont care much for the people who do!”
NOW.. would you like to be treated like this in your neighbourhood, it doesnt just have to be a church or a mast, it could be any organization (pub, shop, ect) out to make a quick buck
and at the same time sticking two fingers up at the people who live in that area.
.
Because it is a church who will “maybe” turn its back on the community around it, just makes this a very sad afair, lets hope that is not the case here.
.
SOME people may say the community do not attend church as much as it should (its the same case all over the country), but that doesnt go the say that they dont respect the church, after all this church has been on friar park for many many years and has had no problems at all with the locals, and the locals have had no problems with those who do attend the church..have they?.
.
let me finish with a question, would the church rather have more people attend the church, who maybe didnt go as much as they could have before…or would church rather take the money and sever all links with the majority of the locals??
.
A true church would surely have only one answer…
