Flash flood nightmare

Saturday 23rd June 2007, 7:00PM BST.

wd2191347flood-3-rh-23.jpgFlood water swept through 25 homes in Staffordshire following severe downpours, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

Devastated families and fire crews from across the county were frantically baling out houses last night – with sofas up on bricks as two feet of water poured into homes during flash floods.

Heavy rainfall caused water to run off nearby fields straight through properties in New Street and Prince Albert Terrace in Norton Bridge.

Ray Wardle, of New Street, was one of the householders counting the cost this morning.

He said: “It had been raining all day, but at around 7.30pm water started cascading through the back fence, into the gardens, then on into the house.

“The settee is up on bricks and the carpet is sodden.”

The homes were amongst those devastated just three years ago in similar circumstances and since then the residents  of the 10 homes in New Street have spent £22,000 of their own cash on a new road surface and gullies.

Mr Wardle said: “Despite all the money we have spent the road still couldn’t cope with the volume of water. One of my neighbours was left sitting halfway up the stairs, the water level was so high.

“We keep experiencing the same problems but no-one seems to want to do anything about it or take responsibility for what’s happening. There is no river to flood, it is all down to drainage.”

Crew commander Chris Berry, of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, was one of the four fire crews to attend the scene of last night’s flooding.

He said: “The water had built up on fields near the homes throughout the day, then flooded through the houses like a stream.

“We were called out at about 7.30 last night and the Stafford crew were on scene until about midnight.

“Some of the residents have moved out to relatives’ homes, although some have stayed on.

“This has happened here before, so some residents were prepared and had moved furniture upstairs where it was safe from the flood waters.”

Stafford town centre has also been affected by the heavy rains that have plagued the town over the last week.

A local car hire business is now searching for new premises in Stafford after its offices were flooded for the fifth time in four years.

The Enterprise Rent-a-car premises in Silkmore Lane saw water up to 4 ft deep build up on the site.

The company’s operations manager for the West Midlands, Angie Thompson, said that staff have been moved to the company’s base in Cannock.

    1) stop paving over your front gardens, and decking over your back gardens
    2) stop developments building vast oceans of car parking with impermeable surfaces
    3) stop driving to supermarkets and offices that build vast oceans of car parking with impermeable surfaces
    5) stop channelling all of the rainwater from your roof into storm drains – install water butts or install rainwater harvesting systems for flushing WCs etc
    6) stop blaming “the guvment” or “the council” for the weather – it’s your fault for driving everywhere, wasting energy in your home and not using renewable energy
    7) don’t buy a home in a flood plain…

    To Andrew popovich.

Looking at your comments its clear to me that you have never suffered from the devastation caused by flooding. I hope for your sake it never happens to you or to any of your family, as i’m sure any help and symapthy will be hard to find.

We suffered from the flooding 3 years ago, but managed to escape it last friday. Its our friends and neighbours that i can’t help feeling for. Its a horrid and very upsetting time.

My sympathy to anyone that has been affected by these floods.

However, there is some truth in what Andrew Popovich has written.

It is apparant that we are all to blame for these freak weather conditions and we must all be aware of the contribution that we make to global warming in our everyday activities.

    FAO Andrew Popovich,

You are a narrow minded silly fool who obviously has nothing better to do with his time than to write unfounded comments about innocent people who are unfortunate enough to suffer the devastation of flooding. My family was unfortunate enough to suffer once again in the recent floods, and we were lucky enough to have the amazing support of all family and friends local to the area. Without these fantastic people and the help given on the day in question the problem would of been much worse…with people like you we just want to say get a life, and why not throw all this wasted energy you put into that pathetic e-mail into something worthwhile… such as people skills, empathy and keeping such pointless unwelcome comments to yourself.
