Security gates and barriers have been put up on a public footpath between two rows of terraced houses in Walsall in a bid to cut burglaries, criminal damage and other problems in the area.

The measures are designed to stop troublemakers gaining easy access to the rear of houses on Countess Street and Earl Street in Pleck.

It follows a number of complaints from residents several of whom have been victims of crime.

The measures are designed to stop troublemakers gaining easy access to the rear of houses on Countess Street and Earl Street in Pleck.

It follows a number of complaints from residents several of whom have been victims of crime.

The gates, fencing and barriers costing £32,000 have been installed by the Safer Walsall Borough Partnership which has been working alongside Walsall Police to tackle problems in the area.

Ouwes Rafiq from the local Neighbourhood Watch Committee, said: “The new security gates are a welcome sight. They not only deter potential criminals but provide residents with peace of mind.

“We would like to thank residents, Walsall Council, local councillors and the police for their support, commitment and excellent work within the community.”

The scheme was carried out under the Improving Local Neighbourhoods Programme, which aims to reduce crime and anti social behaviour within communities.
