The Red Arrows were forced to abandon their flying display at the Cosford Air Show after a hang-glider and microlight invaded the skies.
An investigation was today under way amid accusations the two “ignorant” pilots had spoiled the day.
More than 53,000 people from across the region flocked to see historic aircraft and five-hour flying displays, with the volume of traffic causing miles of tailbacks around the area.
But there was dismay after the Arrows team was forced to cancel the second half of its show on safety grounds when a hang-glider was spotted heading towards the flying zone, followed shortly afterwards by a microlight.
The planes tried to wait until the area cleared but eventually organisers were then left with no choice but to cancel the finale because the planes were in danger of running out of fuel.
Flight Lieutenant Andy Robbins, Red Arrows team manager, said today the “ignorant” pilots had ruined the day for fans. He said the two people involved “had completely ignored any flight planning of the day”.
Air show spokesman, Flight Lieutenant Steve McGuckin, added: “The incidents during the Red Arrows performance are under investigation by the aviation authorities.”
The display had already been delayed because of dense cloud which covered the Cosford skyline.
Visitor Rob Hess, aged 56, from Perton, said: “It’s a shame the Red Arrows didn’t appear towards the end of the programme when they could have performed under cloudless skies.”
The traffic around Cosford was chaotic with drivers enduring two-hour jams. Mr McGuckin said there was disruption but the traffic plan devised by West Mercia Police worked and there were fewer problems than previous years.

hello, i was at the airshow yesterday and find it absolutley awful that the red arrows were unable to complete thier disply. many people went especially to see the reds in particular. i really like that team and wanted to take some photos of them in the new display formations, its a real shame and yesterday was a really sad day in the history of the show.

I would like to ‘thank’ the two pilots who managed to get it completely wrong by encroaching into the designated airspace for the RAF Cosford air show during the Red Arrows display.
Through this mindless entering of the air show airspace, the Red Arrows had to cut short their display which was already the low level display due to the low cloud cover.
As in all instances of flight, the safety of pilots and in this case, spectators is of paramount importance, but had these ‘rogue’ pilots followed the rules they would have known not to have been there.
As it happens my son’s first appreciation of seeing the Red Arrows live was not diminished and all of the other displays were excellent especially the RAF Air Power display which showed the awesome skill and technical ability of our armed forces.
Well done RAF Cosford! An excellent show.

The microlite flew right over our house on the outskirts of Pattingham. 3 of the Red Arrows came very close to him and each let out a little puff of smoke presumably to mark the spot he was in or to watn the others. The microlite was then seen move about eratically as it was clearly caught in the powerful jet stream/bow waves. The idiot was luck not to have been killed or to have caused an even worse crash.

I can remember standing on the top of my treehouse, when i saw the red arrows come over. I can remember a microlight, buzzing over my house just outside of Pattingham. I thought, what is happening. I knew the planes would avoid it, but it was a close call!

What a fantastic day out yet again at Cosford, until two idiots ruined it. We had children with us who were so looking forward to seeing the Red arrows and were left feeling very disappointed. Nevertheless, it was a grat day out and here’s to next years show.

Had a great day, first visit to Cosford. The Red Arrows did a great job in the circumstances, always a joy to see. The whole show was great. Easy entry and exit from the show.
Will be back in 2008.
