Apology on multi-faith plan error
Tuesday 29th May 2007, 7:27AM BST.
A report in yesterday’s Express & Star wrongly stated that an application for a mosque had been submitted for an industrial site near Walsall Manor Hospital.
The application by Gurmukhi Building Design Ltd to develop the site, on Manor Industrial Estate opposite the hospital car park on Pleck Road, is in fact for a multi-faith centre to cater for banqueting, parties, weddings and conferences. The centre, which will not be used for worship, would be available to the community as a whole.
Councillor Harbans Sarohi, a Pleck ward councillor, has called the application in for a debate at Walsall Council’s development control committee on Thursday. He said: “It is not a mosque and it will be used for functions only for the whole community.”
He is supporting the idea because he feels there is no existing facility which can cope with such large parties. It also has the support of ward councillor Mushtaq Ahmed.
It would have 78 car parking spaces and a floor space of 1,726 square metres.
The plans have already picked up support from 13 different businesses at the industrial estate and a number of caterers.
Objections to the plans have been received from Walsall Council’s transportation department which believes parking provision is “inadequate”. Walsall Regeneration Company has also registered an objection as bosses feel the scheme would affect the development of the entire town centre.
The Express & Star apologises for the mistake and any confusion caused.
