Jackie McNamaraJackie McNamara departed Molineux today with an uplifting message for Wolves’ devastated fans: “The future is bright.”

As the dust settles on Wolves’ heart-breaking play-off defeat, McNamara confirmed he is to end his two-year association with the club – with Aberdeen his likely destination.

The Scot was not offered a new contract as Mick McCarthy hunts for younger faces to help rebuild his defence in the summer.

McNamara is predicting a new dawn for Wolves’ young guns – and thinks they can start next season’s Championship campaign brimming with confidence.

“This team have a lot to look forward to next season, especially after the start to the season  when we had so few players,” he said.

“You look at the situation from November and the run of games we had and you can take a lot of confidence from that into next year.

“As for me, it is the end at Wolves. I knew a few weeks ago that was going to be the case after I spoke to the manager.

“It was obvious that there wasn’t going to be anything in the way of a deal on the table for me and I took the view that it was me finished at the club when the season finished.

“I think he wants younger lads which I can understand and would expect. The lads he’s got here have done really well and I wish them all the best.”

After being signed from Celtic amid much fanfare back in 2005 McNamara has endured a frustrating spell at Molineux, suffering hip and knee injuries which ruled him out for long periods.

“It’s been two good years for me – I just wish I could have contributed a bit more without injuries,” he said.

“The fans have been fantastic to me. I’m just disappointed I haven’t been able to show them a bit more – but there is nothing much I can do about injuries. It’s been quite frustrating.

“If I was staying down south I would stay here, but I’m going to go back to Scotland. It is possibly Aberdeen but a few things need to be ironed out.”

McNamara leads a likely exodus of some of the club’s more experienced players who are out of contract. Carl Cort, Michael Oakes and Rohan Ricketts are all set to leave.

Not sure what other Wolves fans think of him, but I would like to wish him luck for the future. His career at the Molineux never really took off owing to injuries, but based on what I saw last night, he’s still a fine defender.

Best of luck to Jackie, really sad to see him go, weve only just begun to see the best of him and after he returned to the side, we looked a great deal better at the back. When he didnt play we missed him. His experience could have been useful for next season. Good luck to him though, just a shame we didnt see more of him.

Good luck for the future Jackie, I thought we looked far better in defence during the season when he played. I think that having his experience around next season would have helped the younger players next season.

Thank you Jackie for all your hard work during the last 2 years. Wolves will be a sadder place without your experience and skill. All the best with your new club and your future. Wolves can only get better with the new squad we have. Here’s to bigger and hopefully better things.

Thank you Jackie. You’ve been a great asset to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and will be sorely missed by players and fans alike. A rock at the back and it is just a shame your injuries minimised the chances we got to see you play. Good luck for the future!

I can’t understand why we haven’t offered him another contract because he was our classiest defender by far; a strong tackler with intuitive positional skills. He’s had to cover for Breen & Craddock many countless times in recent matches.

I like what he described the Wolves fans who was at the Hawthorns…”To sing like they were doing when they were watching the celebrations unfold in front of them is amazing”. I am truly proud of all the fans who were there that night. Surely we will have more to sing next season.

Thanks Jackie – a quality player. But life moves on, and IF we get to the Premiership, we would need to replace, so best do it now. Just hope we find central defender with pace & power!
