Vic’s a stickler for cash

Wednesday 9th May 2007, 9:00PM BST.

wd2103489vic-2-tt-09.jpgBaggies supporter Vic Stirrup is someone who likes dealing in hard cash – and when the club told him he would have to pay for his play-off tickets by card, Vic wasn’t about to change the habit of a lifetime.

The 89-year-old season ticket holder got on the phone and insisted on speaking to Albion finance director Mark Jenkins to tell him what he thought about his fancy payment methods.

The club relented and made an exception in his case, much to the satisfaction of the life-long Baggies fan.

The situation arose over the arrangements which Albion put in place in the event of the club getting to the play-offs.

Season ticket holders were invited to apply and pay for tickets in advance.

They were given the promise of a refund, should the club not manage to make it this far.

Forms were sent through the post, including a payment form requiring bank details of the applicants.

“Mr Jenkins said ‘You mean you haven’t got a credit or a debit card? Not even a cheque book?’,” Vic said at his Smethwick home.

“He couldn’t believe it.”

“I don’t believe in plastic, and I haven’t had a cheque book since I had my newsagents business.

“You know where you are with cash.

“I’ve been going to the Albion for 83 years, and I’ve always paid in cash.

“I’m not going to stop at my age.”

The club subsequently told Vic that they were happy to accommodate one of their longest-serving supporters.

Voted Barclays Fan of the Year in 2005, he has missed only five Baggies games, home and away, in more than 60 years.

He even abandoned plans for his wedding to wife Brenda when a fixture change resulted in a game clashing with his big day.

Vic started supporting his beloved team in 1924, at the age of six.

He has been a season ticket holder for 67 years – always paying in cash.

Well done to Vic for standing by his principles.

I got my ticket for the semi yesterday in the Sme End but it hasn’t got a bar code! They said they have activated my stile card….I’m a member, so I don’t have one! I shall now have to go to the ground to sort it out.

Never mind, I’m sure it will be all worth it, when I see the Baggies running out at Wembley.

    Come on you Baggie Boys!!
