Woman trapped by train freed
Monday 30th April 2007, 11:59AM BST.
A woman was trapped underneath a Severn Valley Railway train for 90 minutes after falling through the platform gap while trying to rescue her dog.
A man, believed to be her husband, also fell into the gap between the platform and the train as he tried to reach her yesterday.
It happened at Hampton Loade station on the Kidderminster to Bridgnorth line.
The train was just pulling off the station heading for Bridgnorth when the woman’s Jack Russell dog ran off down the platform.
The woman ran after the dog and fell over into the gap between the train and the platform. The woman’s partner also fell into the gap. The couple are believed to be elderly.
The train guard pulled the emergency brake and the train was stopped. The woman suffered a serious injury to her leg but her partner was believed to have escaped with minor injuries.
Firefighters went underneath the train to release the man. He was taken to hospital in Telford.
Fire crews also helped the woman who was still trapped under the carriage and in pain. The crews spent 90 minutes releasing the woman who was then taken by Air Ambulance to Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham.

I was on the train two carriages away from the incident. The emergency services and not forgetting the station staff dealt with the incident excellently but could have briefed the other passengers to stop them being nosey and getting in the way. The one thing in the whole event that digusted me was some people were taking pictures and complaining that it was taking too long.

Why was the dog running loose in the first place ?

I was on the platform when the accident happened. Just wanted to say WELL DONE to the Engine Driver & Engineer & Gaurd Driving the train as they stopped the trian very very quickly, These trains are massive & they alone averted an even worse tradagy, Thank god these people are relativly ok. Once again well done to all the services involved.

For Jennifer Moore ! I am the daughter of the injured couple and the dog was not running loose, that was not true, my mom is elderly and suffers cancer and can hardly walk she simply lost her balance, a passer by had the dog ! so get your facts straight before commenting, it had nothing to do with our family pet ! my dad was holding her on a lead !

This is a reply for Julie Wills.
I too was on the train during this awful incident. I was sat opposite your mum, dad and the dog (who was really well behaved).
I am so releived to know that both your parents are doing ok. Please send them my regards. Although I don’t know them they have been in my thoughts all week.
Our friends who were also on the train are both surgeons. They were there in seconds to help your parents and did a fantastic job in such difficult circumstances.
best wishes danielle

As a member/ Volunteer of the railway,i originally found this out on the railways Forum, it is nice to hear that your parents are doing well, and it is good the Guard and fireman acted quickly. And to the people who were insecnestive about not being able to complete their journey, the train could not be moved to avoid further injuries

I’m sorry to see posters squabbling about whether or not the dog was on a lead or not.
I am truely sorry to hear of anyone injured in this manner but I am also amazed and delighted the injuries were no more serious.
With the massive weights involved you family’s guardian angel was working overtime on sunday.
