Police in new appeal on killer

wd2061955.jpgDetectives hunting the killer of a Sedgley father are still searching for a crucial breakthrough to help them crack the case – despite quizzing more than 100 people.

They plan to widen the net for information and say the public holds the key to solving the murder.

As the investigation into the murder of Andrew Owen moves into the third week, detectives said they were still looking for vital clues to piece together the victim’s final moments.

Mr Owen, aged 42, died just yards from his home after a struggle in Coronation Gardens, Dudley Road, Sedgley, in the early hours of April 14 as he walked home after a night out.

Despite a major appeal publicised in the Press resulting in more than 100 people coming forward, officers are desperate for a lead and believe just one tip-off from the public could crack the case.

Detective Superintendent Mick Treble revealed today police hoped to stage a reconstruction of the victim’s last known movements.

“It’s one of those cases that will be solved by someone in the community speaking about a loved-one or friend acting differently and giving us that vital phone call,” he said. Detectives are still waiting for experts to reveal exactly how Mr Owen died, though they are certain natural causes were not to blame

After speaking to a man who was drinking with Mr Owen on the night of his death, the victim’s movements have been pinpointed until about 12.40am on Sunday morning.

But with paramedics called to the scene at about 2am, that leaves a crucial question mark hanging over Mr Owen’s final moments.

Mr Treble said police were in negotiations with the BBC programme Crimewatch to feature the case.

“We are prepared to take advantage of anything that has the ability to jog people’s memories. It’s really early days at the moment but we won’t turn anything down if it helps us solve the case.

“We are in negotiations with them to see how our investigation progresses and how best it could be featured on the programme if necessary.”
