The Land Rover Discovery and white Transit van, which was being towed, both overturned, causing the road to be blocked yesterday.

The route heading in the direction of Willenhall and Wolverhampton from Walsall town centre was completely closed for around half an hour from 2pm.

Afterwards, just one lane of the dual carriageway was in operation until 4pm as firefighters, police and paramedics dealt with the accident – which happened just before the Keyway exit.

It caused traffic tailbacks for motorists coming out of Walsall town centre along Wolverhampton Road and around Junction 10 of the M6.

It is thought the driver of the Land Rover may have come off the motorway and lost control causing both vehicles to overturn. A child, believed to be aged around three, was in the back of the Land Rover.

Watch manager Ivan Lilley, from Willenhall fire station, said the van was being towed by the Land Rover and both vehicles spun around which meant the incident could have had far worse consequences.

He said that the child was wearing a seat belt and was taken to hospital as a precaution with bruising to the face. The drivers were not injured.

Mr Lilley said: “It appears the Land Rover Discovery was pulling the white van with a fixed towbar and they capsized and spun round 180 degrees.

“The seat belt did its job and prevented the child from suffering any further injuries. It could have been a lot worse. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

Firefighters helped to make the area safe until the vehicles were moved on. The road completely reopened to traffic by late afternoon.
