People with a head for heights have been taking in the glorious views from the top of a Midland city’s heritage centre spire over the Easter weekend.

The spire gives one of the best views of Lichfield from a height of more than 40 metres (131ft). The viewing platform is now regularly open to the public at weekends and on some weekdays.

Staff at the heritage centre are hoping to attract even more visitors to the attraction.

The spire gives one of the best views of Lichfield from a height of more than 40 metres (131ft). The viewing platform is now regularly open to the public at weekends and on some weekdays.

Staff at the heritage centre are hoping to attract even more visitors to the attraction.

Lichfield’s Heritage Centre, once the historic St Mary’s Church, is staffed by volunteers and over the bank holiday weekend more than 20 people took the blood pumping climb to the top. In total to reach the viewing platform visitors must climb 144 steps to the top and only people in good health are advised to try the ascent.

For insurance reasons children under 10 are not allowed up the spire. Marguerite Barber of Lichfield Heritage Centre said: “We have now got enough volunteers to have the platform open on Saturday afternoons, all day Sunday and on Monday afternoons and all day Thursday.”

She added: “It’s quite a good view and on a good day you can see the Toyota factory on the A38.

“Some people have said they can even see the Peak District when the atmosphere is clear.”
