Shock as Shipleys sells site
Friday 23rd March 2007, 5:00PM GMT.
One of the oldest amusement park in the Midlands has been the subject of a shock sale after more than 40 years of trading in Stourport.
The sale of Shipleys in Bridge Street came out of the blue as the company had only recently submitted ambitious £1 million makeover plans. The plans were later withdrawn.
The business is believed to have been sold last month as a going concern to another amusement arcade operator.
The firm had submitted major plans in November to improve facilities and to accommodate children’s parties.
The application to Wyre Forest Council included a new cafe, children’s play area with rides and slides and a new toilet block for visitors.
There were also plans for a new skip storage area and workshop.
The plans were withdrawn in February.
Nobody was available to comment from Shipleys today.
At the time of the plans being submitted, company director Jim Shipley said trade had been affected by the Stourport bridge repair work.
The opening hours of the site had been reduced for the first time due to a loss of trade.
But the chairman of Bridge Street Business Association, Pete Roberts said: “We are not surprised by the sale – it’s been on the cards for a long time.
“We believe the firm wants to concentrate on its bingo halls.
“It appears the amusement business is being carried on and the new company has brought its own staff into the venture.
“We believe the owner has another similar venture in Symond’s Yat, Herefordshire.
“We’re pleased the site is remaining open – it’s been an important attraction for the town for many years and is popular with tourists and day-trippers.”
