Investigations were also being carried out by BT to establish how the damage was caused in the telephone exchange.Problems were reported to BT on Sunday.

Emma Tennant, spokeswoman for BT, said: “The cables were cut somewhere in the exchange and we are investigating the cause of that cable damage.

“We are still investigating how it happened.”

She said it was difficult to pinpoint exactly which areas of the town were affected but Pye Green Road, the Bevan Lee estate, Longford and parts of Bridgtown were among those believed to be affected.

Several businesses left without working phones diverted calls to a mobile phone number.

Phone lines at Nationwide Skips Ltd, off Ellesmere Road, Longford, were down until 2.15pm yesterday.

Managing director David Merrett said: “It’s been absolute hell. We have five lines and diverted calls to a mobile so we had all those calls coming through to one mobile phone.”
