Duo braced for cold shoulder
Thursday 15th March 2007, 8:00PM GMT.
Former Wolves man Lee Naylor and Villa’s Gareth Barry appear to have missed out in the battle to play in England’s Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel in Tel Aviv a week on Saturday.
Naylor, now at Celtic, and Barry were expected to have featured in some way with first-choice Ashley Cole suspended and deputy Wayne Bridge out after undergoing cartilage surgery.
But, with the 23-man squad due to be announced tomorrow, sources close to the England camp have indicated that the duo will miss out, although Barry may retain his place in the squad.
Instead, coach Steve McClaren is set to favour Liverpool central defender Jamie Carragher to win the battle with fellow right-footed player Phil Neville for the left-back slot.
Neville started the last game, a disappointing 1-0 friendly defeat against Spain at Old Trafford last month.
Barry ended his three and a half year exile from the international set-up by winning his ninth cap, initially starting in the No 3 role before moving to left midfield.
The blow will come as a disappointment to both Naylor – who has been watched regularly by England scouts north of the border – and Barry, who both harboured hopes of figuring in Israel.
Barry said: “I hope to be involved. I felt I did enough in the last game to stay in the squad so we’ll have to wait and see.
“It was good to be involved and I don’t think I did anything wrong.”
Naylor, who has two under-21 caps from his time at Wolves, said: “I work my socks off every day for Celtic and if that gets the attention of of England, I’d be absolutely delighted. It’s my dream and I will continue to pursue it, but it’s up to the England boss to decide and it’s a case of ‘fingers crossed’.
The Champions’ League does give you a better chance of getting looked at and possibly getting selected.
“I gave a good account of myself against Milan so I’ve given him something to think about.”
Meanwhile Preston’s David Nugent has been earmarked for a call-up should the squad suffer any withdrawals up front.
Up to 12 players are due to feature in FA Cup replays on Monday.

Phil Neville??? Why not give Naylor a go? Got to be better than that charlaton!

No surprise that Midlands based footballers tend to get overlooked – It appears that unless you play for Man Utd, Chelski, Arsenal or Liverpool – you’ve got little or no chance
Lee Naylor has done well at Celtic so far – one of the home grown former Wolves lads – we wonder if Blues Wolves and Albion get promoted – and manage to stay there – would any of the Midlands based team players be considered?
Sadly doubtfull as any England manager – especially Maclaren would not have the backbone to select players outside of the “Big Clubs” for fear of ridicule or a bad result – We have to agree with AW – Phil Neville? 3 words ” Sell By Date” spring to mind!
