Mess after travellers leave
Tuesday 13th March 2007, 8:00PM GMT.
Travellers today abandoned the site of a former petrol station, leaving a scene of “absolute devastation”.
Now the group has moved for the second time in a fortnight – just a mile down the road to the car parks of the B&Q store and Mecca Bingo in Bilston.
The derelict former Texaco filling station has been “trashed” after the convoy set up camp there for nearly two weeks.
Since the group pulled on to the site, in Birmingham New Road, Lanesfield, on March 3, the site has become covered in litter, discarded tyres, broken glass, cans and bottles.
And an adjacent derelict bungalow, which has been earmarked for development, has also been destroyed inside, with parts of the roof ripped off, and windows and fencing panels smashed. The group moved on to the petrol station after being kicked off the former GKN factory, literally across the road.
Most of them have now set up camp at the B&Q DIY store, off the Black Country Route, in Bilston, with some pulling on to the Mecca Bingo car park.
Spring Vale councillor Malcolm Gwinnett said: “I am absolutely gutted.
“I can’t believe the amount of damage that has been caused in such a short space of time. The place is absolutely trashed.
“It is devastating to see the amount of mess that has been caused. They go and move just a mile down the road and the problem goes on and on.”
Residents living nearby said they had been “living a nightmare” since the travellers set up camp.
Police today said they were unable to confirm whether they would be investigating the criminal damage.

how much longer do we have to put up with these ‘animals’? they dont pay tax and no respect for anyone or anything. the police and the council are a waste of time in sorting these so called people out. they should be given no rights what so ever, they are a blight on our society.

The existing legislation should be amended to insert an offence of ‘aggrevated trespass’, whereby the police have the power to order anyone discovered occupying land without the owner’s permission to move within hour upon forfeit of having their property seized.
Similarly, the local authority should have the power to seize and hold any such property as a bond to offset any costs incurred cleaning up occupied sites.

Well when I read comments like those above I wonder if we have all forgot the hollocaust. It seems that when it comes to Gypsies and Travellers there is never any positive press. We steretype, marginalise and discriminate against Travellers, would you as a paper cover any other ethnic minority group in such a way? I doubt it.Blight on our society, bastards, should be given no rights. .
Can I just point out that there are children amongst this group and the government does state that Every Child Matters this does include Gypsies and Travellers. Also when the new housing needs assessment is completed by all Local Authorities and adequate site provision is made, then maybe this will aleviate some of pressures that Traveller families face in having no legal place to stay which forces them to break the law.
