Hospital fines for 25 drivers
Monday 12th March 2007, 4:59PM GMT.
A total of 25 people have been fined £30 for inconsiderate parking at Walsall Manor Hospital during the first two weeks of a controversial crackdown.
People who have failed to use designated spaces at the Moat Road site have been hit with a bill.
Bosses at Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust have created no-go areas where visitors can’t leave their vehicles which are highlighted by red lines and signs.
The aim is to stop drivers causing an obstruction, which sometimes makes it difficult for ambulances to get through, and taking up spaces earmarked for disabled visitors.
Sarah Faulkner, spokesperson for the Trust, said 25 fines had been issued inside the first two weeks of the high-profile crackdown.
She added: “We have made appropriate visible signs on the site and hopefully people are becoming aware of where they can and can’t park.”
The initiative was launched in February but a month-long amnesty was put in place meaning motorists who parked inconsiderately were warned rather than fined.
More than 200 visitors were handed formal warnings with between 12 and 20 written notices a day.
A team of security guards monitor the hospital grounds to enforce the rules.
The move has prompted fears over congestion on streets surrounding the hospital as drivers are forced to look elsewhere for spaces.
