Police Community Support Officers were yesterday blitzing drivers who dumped their cars outside Russells Hall Hosptal, Dudley.

The problem of people clogging up Pensnett Road and other streets surrounding the hospital has been well-publicised recently. Many park on the road to avoid forking out for hospital parking charges.

And police say residents living near the site regularly complain about cars taking up spaces outside their homes. Some fed-up householders have even threatened to put bollards outside their homes.

Sergeant Clive Steedman said the issue was one of the top concerns flagged up by people who attend police meetings and officers are working closely with the hospital to tackle it.

“People who park on roads around the hospital is an issue often raised at our surgeries,” he said.

“We are working very closely with the hospital to try and solve the problem. We sit down with them and explain that it is causing residents grief and we look at how we can deal with it.

“It is vital drivers think of other road users because illegal parking can lead to injury and other accidents.”

Hospital spokeswoman Clare Craddock said there were adequate spaces for visitors and there was no excuse for people to park on the road.

“The Trust and its partner, Interserve are continuing to work closely to ensure the Russells Hall Hospital site is safe in terms of traffic management and car parking,” she said.

“There are sufficient car parking spaces available for patients and visitors on the site, so inappropriate parking on the road or on public pavements is not excusable, therefore we welcome the support of the local police in helping us to manage the traffic and car parking on site.”

If you park correctly on a public road with no parking limits and not blocking anyones driveway it is not illegal…..

Having to pay to see sick relatives is sick in itself. Shame on the authorities – they sold the car parking to private enterprise. People visiting the hospital have no choice on where to park so either have to pay the car parking charges or now risk a fine. Is it not about time the Government and Council stopped being so blind? Get rid of the car parking charges and you won’t have people parking on the roads. It’s not difficult.

Typical response by the police. Instead of helping the whole community they alienate a part of it by their methods. Why isn’t there pressure brought to bear on those that force this situation on the visitors? Of course I feel sympathy for the residents, but the police have just chosen a shabby option that will do them no good at all. Shame on them.

I have a relation who has cancer, he is having an horrendous time, he doesn’t work obviously but out of his meagre income has had to pay to park when he goes for treatment, its not the patients in the hospital that’s sick, it’s the greedy morons who run the councils and hospitals that are really sick, how can they live on their money knowing it has come from people who are terminally ill.

It was stated that the car parking area was sold to Interserve, who sold it too them ?, that land belongs to us the tax payer, it doesn’t belong to those greedy lot who run the hospitals, also Interserve are the same ones who got the monopoly for installing the over priced TV and Phones at the patients bedsides, just how many other companies were consulted and asked to put in a price for the contract?

Hospital spokeswoman Clare Craddock, I wonder what her income is and why she should try to force people to pay the exorbitant parking fees at Russells Hall Hospital, I would have thought any fair minded person who had the interests of the patients at heart would have wanted to have the parking fees lowered.

People this is in your hands now, remember the local elections are coming up very soon, if the people who run our council and hospitals don’t have a job, then I am sure the system this system would change overnight, does your councillor pay to park his motor when he attends the council house? And its no good them arguing they are doing council work, what about all the other people who have to pay parking charges to work, people like hospital staff.
