Mick: We’re winning fans’ trust

Mick McCarthy has hailed the return of positivity to Molineux – and reckons supporters are finally starting to “trust” his Wolves young guns.
Last weekend’s bumper home crowd has been followed by Wolves’ travelling army selling out their allocation for the crunch clash with Luton five days before the game – signs that some stay-away supporters are finally being won over after the deep discontent of the Glenn Hoddle era.
And the Wolves boss reckons that with a series of pivotal home games against their Championship rivals on the horizon, that is a positive sign.
“I thought the fans were fantastic against Leeds, really really positive,” he said.
“I have said all along I think they’ve been understanding and supportive of the players. It’s just the other stuff that’s been going on that they’ve been unhappy about.
“We’ll need them again in some of the big games coming up with the likes of West Brom, Southampton and Birmingham. Of course, all of our remaining fixtures all big games now, but it’s important that the trust is there.
“It was a very significant win on Saturday because had we not won maybe people would have gone away, in particular people who hadn’t been for a while, and said ‘it’s just the same old story’.
“Thankfully we won and I think they all went away happy and full of it. I think there was a lot patience there from the supporters as well, but that has been there all season.”
McCarthy reckons the defeat of Leeds showed his side are beginning to learn how to kill teams off.
“I think it does show that we have developed,” he said. “I told the players at half-time against Leeds that they deserved to be in front – we should have had penalty and hit the woodwork.
“But it was important not to lose the game by going gung-ho with a ‘win-at-all-costs’ mentality.
“There have been times when we’ve maybe been desperate to go on and get a win like in the game against Cardiff when we played terrific and ended up losing.
“We were going at it hammer and tongs and trying to get the win but sometimes maybe you just have to take the point.”
