DIY baby delivery
Thursday 15th February 2007, 10:08AM GMT.
A Coseley dad took matters into his hands and ended up delivering his own baby in the front seat of a car while the family was on the way to hospital.
Kerrie Wilson, aged 27, started having contractions en route.
Her mother Rita Wilkes, who was driving Kerrie and partner Phil Oakley to the hospital, was forced to pull her BMW over to the side of the road near the Hare & Hounds pub in Stow Heath at around 4pm.
On the phone to a nurse, Phil was talked through the procedure and managed to deliver a healthy daughter in the front passenger seat.
Phil, aged 28, of Hursthill, said: “As we turned into Stowheath Lane, she told me it was coming.
“I have to say, she was pretty calm throughout and that helped me to remain calm.
“I was a bit nervous but the fact that I had the nurse talking me through it meant I was fully concentrated on following the instructions and that helped me stay calm too.
“When she was born, the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck but I managed to take untangle her myself and both she a Kerrie were absolutely fine.”
The couple, who already have a two-year-old son called Jamie have yet to choose a name for their new daughter, who weighed in at 7lbs 2oz.
