Millions to be spent on projects

Stafford Borough is set to see £4m worth of improvement projects over the next financial year.

Stafford’s Gatehouse Theatre, St John’s Market and the Streetscene department are all set to benefit from a slice of the cash.

Other schemes to be funded in 2007/08 include the Riverscape /Waterscape improvement project, set to cost the council £500,000, car parking improvements, totalling £400,000 and decriminalised parking enforcement, set to cost £350,000.

A report issued to cabinet members reveals plans for £80,000 improvements to the Gatehouse Theatre, “heritage improvements”, refurbishments to St John’s Market and the purchase of new Streetscene equipment.

The report shows that during the next financial year the council’s biggest single outlay will be providing disabled facilities grants which are given people in the borough to adapt their homes, both in the social and private sectors.

The scheme is set to cost the council half a million pounds with the government providing funding for 60 per cent of the total grant figure.

Councillor Ralph Cooke said: “I shall be keeping an eye on these developments, but it’s certainly good news for the borough.
