Families in chemists boycott

Angry residents are organising a boycott of two West Bromwich chemists in protest to a takeover bid.

Lloyds chemist is poised to move into a new row of shops being built as part of a multi-million revamp of the area, sparking a 2,000-name petition amid fears the move will put the independent Lyng Pharmacy at risk.

Supporters are now handing out leaflets outside Lloyds branches in West Bromwich town centre and the Stone Cross precinct urging people to “put a stop to corporate greed” by supporting their local pharmacy.

The leaflets also accuse Lloyds of trying to squeeze out small, independent shopkeepers.

The leaflets also accuse Lloyds of trying to squeeze out small, independent shopkeepers.

The West Bromwich east MP Tom Watson has invited campaigners to join him for talks he has organised with Lloyds executives.

He said: “There is very strong support for the Lyng Pharmacy and I wanted the company to see that.

“I told them that the residents handed me a 2,000-strong petition within days of hearing their local chemist was being threatened. They were left in no doubt as to the strength of community opinion.

Sue Collis, leading the fight, e-mailed 72 councillors asking them to back the fight. “We’ve been sold down the river by the council and the developers,” she said.
