Council workers to retire at 70

The maximum retirement age for Dudley Council workers is set to be increased from 65 to 70 because scores are opting to stay on, creating a mountain of paperwork for admin staff.

Bosses at the authority have now increased the maximum retirement age from 65 to 70 to cope with the number of requests to stay on. Workers will still be able to retire at 65 if they wish.

The main reason given to the council by staff who want to stay on is not due to financial concerns but fears they will have nothing to do with their time.

Councillor Pat Martin, cabinet member for personnel, Law & Property, said it was an enormous boost to the authority to have experienced staff who wanted to stay on.

“Ever since the scheme was introduced in 2004 it has proved enormously popular,” she said.

“In every case so far the request has been granted.”
