Family and friends of father-of-two Darron Tranter, from West Bromwich, looked on in horror as a car ploughed into him shortly after they left a McDonald’s in France.

The 37-year-old, who worked as a self-employed office relocator, was a passenger in the minibus travelling to catch a ferry home from Calais when the accident happened.

His partner Candy Young, of St Paul’s Crescent, Hill Top, paid tribute to him following an inquest yesterday at West Bromwich Town Hall.

The devastated 33-year-old said their children, six-year-old Riyanah and four-year-old Rebecca, were now facing a first Christmas without the love of their lives. “He was a fantastic father and a fantastic partner,” she said.

“He did everything for his children. He loved coming home from work and playing with them.”

Miss Young said they had been enjoying a weekend break in Paris with family and friends.

The inquest heard the party of eight had stopped at a McDonald’s drive-though restaurant at around 10.30pm on June 4.

As they drove away from the restaurant, Mr Tranter dropped some money out of the window onto the main highway. They pulled over to allow him to pick it up.

Mr Tranter was hit by a Citroen C3 as he made his way back to the vehicle.

Miss Candy told the inquest: “Darron jumped out to collect the note. We were saying no, no, don’t jump out. He was gone a few seconds and we heard an almighty bang.”

Black Country Coroner Robin Balmain returned an open verdict and said he was not satisfied with information received from the French authorities. “I really don’t think what we have heard has adequately explained what happened, ” he said.
