Best club acts honoured
Friday 27th October 2006, 12:25PM BST.
Seven of the West Midlands’ brightest and best loved club acts were honoured before a packed out crowd at the town’s Royal British Legion, and returned the favour with a night of sparkling entertainment.
Singled out for particular praise at the Midlands Counties Entertainment Secretaries’ Awards was Halesowen singer Gary James who received the newly created lifetime achievement award at last night’s event.
In addition to entertaining countless audiences with his songs for the past two decades, Gary has also played a major role in raising more than £1 million for local charities through fundraising shows.
He said he was honoured to receive the award, which like the rest, was voted on by the entertainment secretaries of around 50 clubs from Smethwick to Highley and Wolverhampton to Stourbridge.
“I’ve been singing solo since 1988, and before that I was in various bands,” he said.
“And I’m absolutely delighted to have been voted for by so many different people to get this award.
“The fact that it’s the first award of its kind makes it mean all the more.”
Vocalist Nathan Saunders of Quarry Bank, took the top newcomer title at last night’s event.
Tracey Rhodes – Our Trace, of Four Ashes, picked up best comedienne, while Tony Gold, of Darlaston, was named top entertainer. Stars in their Eyes veteran Jon Grant, of Netherton, is now the association’s number-one male vocalist.
Best female vocalist is Sharon Danielle, of Dudley, and top duo are brother and sister singing team Gareth and Hayley Jeavons, of Parkfields in Wolverhampton.
Malcolm Edwards, Midland Counties secretary, said that the awards, which have been an annual fixture for decades, were a vital way of celebrating the best talent on the circuit.
“They all do a wonderful job and this night is all about saying thanks for all the work they’ve done over the past 12 months,” he said.
“And it’s also a chance for entertainment secretaries from across the region to get together, too.”
