M6 flyover ‘would stop jams’

Monday 23rd October 2006, 8:41PM BST.

Travel West Midlands director Phil Bateman has called for an urgent review at the blackspot which has become exasperating for motorists travelling at all times of the day.

He said the cost to industry and commerce around Wolverhampton and Walsall must be “extraordinary”.

He added that motorists were often left queuing along the A454 for up to 30 minutes during peak times along the mile-long stretch.

Diversions caused by extensive motorway roadworks, which have been ongoing since the summer have added to growing queues which at rush hour, sparking long tailbacks which go back as far as the Wolverhampton border.

Mr Bateman said local bus services were being seriously impeded by the problems and urged highways chiefs to think of a solution.

He said: “There needs to be a way of separating the local traffic from those wanting to use the motorway. I think a flyover above the junction would definitely help the situation.”

“I have been sat in those queues myself for ages and it is very infuriating.

“It is not going to get better, and if anything, it will get worse,” he said.

“Our bus services from Wolverhampton to Walsall are affected daily and if there is a crash it just destroys Walsall. The cost to industry and commerce must be extraordinary.

“It affects everybody, not just the commuters but the people that just want to hop on a bus or go on a short journey,” he added.

Mr Bateman said that he had been in contact with highways engineers at Wolverhampton City Council. They told him a diversion, because of the closure of the M6 southbound junction 9 entry slip road due to major roadworks, had increased traffic flow around the roundabout.

The slip road is not due to reopen until March 2008.
