Pressure intense for Mowbray

Wednesday 18th October 2006, 10:47AM BST.

But it remains to be seen just how comfortable he finds that very seat in the months to come.

Because Mowbray finds himself in a pretty unique position.

Most new managers find themselves taking over clubs failing to live up to expectations.

They arrive with the brief of arresting a slump in fortunes.

But Mowbray takes over a team which is already very much on the up.

The task he would have originally been expected to perform – re-igniting a team struggling to fulfill its potential – has already been completed.

Over the last three games Albion have actually out-stripped expectations.

On one hand that should make Mowbray’s job easier than he could have anticipated.

On the other it leaves him on a hiding to nothing.

If he wins promotion many will argue the club’s success was already pretty much guaranteed by the efforts of the previous regime.

Mowbray inherits a side already in third place, which has just won three league games on the bounce.

The foundations for success are already firmly in place.

Many of the changes he might have made – removing Ronnie Wallwork from the centre of midfield, giving Darren Carter a run in that position, reintroducing Jason Koumas to the side – have already been effected.

The opportunity to have a major impact at the very beginning of his tenure has been removed.

As such if Albion secure promotion he is unlikely to gain full credit for their success.
But anything less than a return to the Premiership will be viewed as a major failure and the responsibility will rest almost entirely at his door.

Detractors would point to the position Mowbray finds Albion in today and question how he failed to convert that into a successful promotion campaign.

Nothing in football is guaranteed but there can be little doubt the Baggies manager is taking over the strongest squad in the Championship.

Promotion is now an absolute must.

The new manager has simply no margin for error.

The pressure in the dugout promises to be intense.
