Shakespeare takes centre stage

Pearson was supposed to lead the team for one last time at Selhurst Park before handing over the reins to new boss Tony Mowbray tomorrow. But Pearson, who masterminded a four match unbeaten run following Bryan Robson’s departure, including Saturday’s 5-1 thrashing of Ipswich, has decided to go now.
Mowbray will continue his watching brief tonight, leaving reserve team manager Shakespeare to take charge from the dug-out.
“Nigel felt that, with the imminent arrival of Tony, it was in the football club’s best interests for him to stand down,” said chairman Jeremy Peace today.
“We understand Nigel’s reasons and wish to acknowledge the role he has played, not only since Bryan Robson left the club but also over the past two years.
“He has conducted himself in a very professional manner during what must have been a difficult time for him considering he joined the club with Bryan.
“Although Nigel never put himself forward as a candidate for the vacant manager’s position, the way he has carried himself, and the results he has gained, will have done absolutely no harm to his future career prospects.
“We would like to wish Nigel and his family all the very best for the future.”
Pearson’s early departure lends weight to the belief that the arrival of Mark Venus as Mowbray’s assistant is imminent.
Defender Paul Robinson said he was sad to see Pearson go and urged Albion to say their goodbyes with three more points tonight.
“I feel sorry for Nigel because he took control of the team at a difficult time and has done very well,” said Robinson.
“Now we have got to go and do our jobs and win the game tonight.
“Nigel came in and has been very professional and the lads have got behind him as much as we can.
“He kept us lifted and together as a group. He has proved himself as a manager because we haven’t lost since he took over.”
