The folk-pop star shot to fame when he won the Mercury Music Prize in 2000 and performed the signature track to the Hugh Grant film About A Boy.

He has drawn up a shortlist of 10 chippies across the country where he could be playing tracks from his new album Born in the UK, which is released on October 16.

Among them is the Ocean Fish Restaurant in Cleveland Street, Wolverhampton. Owner Anthony Georgio said: “I haven’t got a clue why we were chosen. We just got a phone call asking us if we would take part. If selected we’ll be happy to have him.”

Pictured at the Ocean are Alexandra Rostocka and Elaine Clyne.

Fans of the singer, whose real name is Damon Gough, can now log on to his website www.badlydrawnboy.co.uk and vote for the Ocean. On his new album cover, Badly Drawn Boy is in a greasy spoon restaurant.
