The scheme at Nightingale Court, Kidderminster, includes a new twist on creature comforts and general manager Judy Starkey says the joy residents get from the visits is plain to see.

“The donkey visits offer entertainment and a welcome distraction from pain and infirmity for some people.

“They are encouraged to talk about their pets and to share their thoughts and feelings and stroking the animals encourages them to use their hands and arms.

“A lot of people have had to give up their pets so it is good for them to see animals brought into the home.

“We have two cats here and some relatives bring their dogs in.

“We also have a woman who walks Guide Dog puppies and brings them for a visit.”

Dr Daniel Nightingale, senior dementia care consultant for Southern Cross Healthcare which owns Nightingale Court, in Comberton Road, is leading major changes, including animal therapy, designed to help stimulate patients both mentally and physically.

Street scenes will also be recreated along corridors including the introduction of road signs and doors painted to the requirement of residents as well as the creation of a pub-style room where they can smoke and a garden area.
