McFly fans cause traffic mayhem
Wednesday 20th September 2006, 12:20PM BST.
Thousands of parents were taking their children to see the boy band perform their first sell-out concert at the venue. They are on again tonight
Irate drivers queued to get into the main car parks of the NEC for over an hour.
Others also faced hefty waits trying to drop off teenagers. The doors opened at 6pm, but many arrived well after the support act kicked off the show at 7.30pm.
Legions of adoring female fans from across the Black Country and Staffordshire packed the venue to capacity last night for the first of two sell-out shows.
Tickets for the show went on sale in January and were quickly snapped up, prompting the later announcement of a second date.
Some fans who had crammed the phone lines when they were released managed to buy theirs for the face value of £21, while others paid up to £100 each on ebay.
Charlie Bignell, aged 15, and Shannon Hyland, 14, travelled from Tamworth to watch the show and had managed to get their tickets at face value.
Charlie said: “We bought the tickets to celebrate Shannon’s birthday for a treat. We absolutely love McFly. They are the best band in the world.
“They’re all cute but we especially love Danny and Dougie.”
Meanwhile Jessica O’Leary, 12, of Streetly, Walsall, managed to win a ticket in a radio competiton.
She said: “I’m so excited about the show. I think McFly are so talented, not like a lot of these reality acts you get on TV.”
Abi Crocker, 15, of Cannock said: “We will buy a t-shirt and a programme. You can’t put a price on McFly souvenirs.
The band play the NEC again tonight (Wednesday).
