Make mine a . . . sunflower

Monday 18th September 2006, 8:43PM BST.

Everyone who had successfully grown a sunflower won a prize.

Brian and Lynn Rowley scooped first prize in the competition with their sunflower which measured 12ft 3ins.

The winners were awarded a trophy, bottle of whisky and a T-shirt each.

The sunflower growing contest was the brainchild of the owner of the historic pub, off Sheepfair, David Westwood.

Mr Westwood said: “Earlier in the year we sold all our customers seeds and they went away and grew them.

“They brought the back to the pub and we judged them on height anwd1706310sunflower-1-dw-16.jpgd handed out prizes.”
