Queues for Primark jobs
Tuesday 12th September 2006, 8:28PM BST.
The opening date for the Wulfrun Way department store is yet to be revealed but builders are working around the clock to get it finished in time for October. Jobseekers met with bosses today in the hope of landing one of 130 positions.
Speaking from the queue outside Britannia Hotel, applicants told how they were desperate to be part of the city’s newest retail venture.
Many were students hoping for a part-time job while they studied at college or university.
Fay Bennett, aged 17, said she was looking for work while she studied for her A-levels. She said: “I am a Primark shopper, of course; everyone is now. It’s a great store.”
Twins Hasina and Syma Shah, both 19, were looking for part-time work around their studies at Wolverhampton University.
Hasina said: “I’m studying social welfare law. I’m not sure if that qualifies me to work at Primark.”
The recruitment day organised through Chapel Court Jobcentre saw thousands of hopefuls queueing up to meet store bosses this morning.
Broadcast journalism student Harjit Aulakh, 19, was in the queue. He said: “Everybody shops at Pri-mark now, so we’re all look-ing forward to the store opening.
“I’m about to go to university, and don’t know when my classes will be yet, but I’m hoping for a job at Primark because it will allow me to work flexible hours.”
The new Wolverhampton store will be one of 43 opening across the country as part of an expansion plan by the Irish firm. Primark is widely regarded as one of the leading high street names selling men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, home furnishings and accessories at rock bottom prices.
It is one of two high street stores set to revolutionise shopping in the city centre.
New Look is opening a store in the Mander Centre.
